The Incredible Coneman was a game on PS1 that you may have found on a demo disc back in the day. It was developed by Lars on the Net Yaroze dev kit a PlayStation development kit for hobbyists, enthusiasts, amateur game designers.
The game play is a direct Pacman clone in 3D only less polished. You play as the Incredible Coneman who has to collect all of the pyramid shaped bits in a level to progress whilst you are chased by a bunch of ghosts you have to avoid. If you get hit by a ghost you lose a life and of course when the lives hit 0 the game is over. (Cue Sax Solo!)
There are also stars in the game which make a funky drum hit sound when you collect them and also speed you up temporarily enabling you to dodge ghosts a bit easier and to collect the pyramid bits at a faster rate. The ghosts speed and difficulty seemingly increases the more levels you progress into the game.
That just leaves the best bass riff of all time to discuss. This short loop is the games only semblance of a soundtrack yet has become arguably possibly one of the most recognizable themes in obscure games.
Whilst the artwork is simplistic, the graphics very rough around the edges and the textures a bit garish they do the job and aren't intrusive to the core gameplay. I actually used to think the Coneman looked a little freaky personally!
This possibly was one of my more played games in my youth when I thought the concept of indie games in this format was awesome even back then. It holds up pretty well in comparison to some of today's shovelware and terrible content put on the big platforms and is certainly a fun time waster to revisit from time to time that brings back nice childhood memories before DLC and Season Passes even existed!
Check out the let's play video of The Incredible Coneman below.
If you are interested in the Net Yaroze and enjoy games from the PS1 era you should definitely check this out!
Thank you for reading and watching the video, I would like to cover more Net Yaroze content in the future as there was some great games on there. If you have any recommendations of games to cover or check out please send them across to me!
