So recently i finished Dead Rising 4, this game copped a lot of flak for some reason so i thought i'd check it out and write up a short review, so here we go.
Iv'e loved every Dead Rising game that has come out, and to be honest this one is no different sure it's rough around the edges and maybe it doesn't have as much content or feeling as it's predecessors but it still has the crazy weapon modded zombie slaughter core of the game but with most games there is pro's and cons so lets check some of them out.
Graphics
Graphics wise Dead Rising 4 doesn't reinvent the wheel it's a pretty standard graphical game for 2017 with some interesting choices, such as blood cell shading and very intensive particle aspects.
On the steam reviews many people complained that the game would fail to run properly on any PC and you would receive around 20-40 FPS and crashes as well as massive graphical glitches and the overwhelming majority of reviews quoted this as a broken game with sub par graphics and even worse optimization.
The truth however is that on my PC it ran perfectly fine on ultra at a steady 60 FPS in 1440p, might be because i have a GTX 1080 or it might be because, as usual, people are running current gen games on potatoes and expecting perfect results,
but overall i suffered no problems with this and graphically and mechanically it seemed to run pretty well.
8/10 for graphics.
Story line
This is where a lot of older Dead Rising fans got annoyed, i did too for some parts it definitely is a dead rising game and the return of frank west is great but i think this would of been better served with a new character instead of bringing back West and a little more explanation and setup time for the main story.
The opening of the game sees you with a student of yours called Vick(Very one sided character) she invites you out to enjoy minigolf but drops a bomb shell on you that you're going to a secret research lab for....reasons, it's a very very weak start to the game but the actual base itself is hilarious what you find in there i won't spoil it but you very VERY easily manage to sneak into a secret military base with no resistance at all and basically walk straight into the room they keep their secrets.
It then drops you right in the middle of a zombie outbreak of huge proportions with almost no time to plan or gather equipment.
Overall it's pretty standard for a Dead Rising game to jump back and forth between zones and people and going to X place to obtain Y thing for Z, so in this regard it's par for the course really.
What DID piss a lot of people off including myself was hiding the ending behind a DLC paywall, the game ends pretty abruptly, followed by a very short cinematic and that's that.
But it isn't, frank, now a zombie has managed to regain his humanity through treatments by a certain doctor you meet in the main story and is now on a quest to find a full cure before they're firebombed into oblivion.
This alone hurts the game a LOT hiding true endings behind DLC paywalls is a ridiculous practice in 2017 and the consumers more often than not will simply pirate it or youtube it.
Story 5/10 Ending 1/10
Content
Overall i got about 24 hours of game time out of Dead Rising 4, this would be considerably lower if unlike me, you don't like exploring and gathering blueprints, a lot of features from the previous game are not present like the countdown timer, escorting survivors and psychopaths, instead being replaced with "maniacs" which are pretty bland and serve no real purpose in the game other than to get more PP to upgrade your skill sets.
If you want to jump in and jump headlong into carnage and zombie hordes you'll have immense fun doing that for a time, eventually however it will wear on you having to go through ever regenerating zombie hordes to get anywhere can be pretty tiresome after a few hours.
Weapons wise, i feel it's actually lacking in content that the previous games had with certain items being woefully better than most meaning 9 times out of 10 you'll have exactly the same items throughout the entire game.
Overall rating 6/10
It isn't the best in the franchise, but it isn't the worst it's more just there than anything, it's not a terrible game or an amazing game but it's fun for a bit of zombie killing and mayhem, however at a $50 USD price tag, it's a tad over priced for what it is.
Thanks for reading guys hopefully you've enjoyed this, if you have feel free to leave comments or criticism below!
While I'm against number based ratings (they are an oversimplification in my mind) this is a great review :)
Great post ! Would you mind if I included it in todays "best of gaming"?
