Women in esports?

Can anyone give me a good reason why there aren't very many women on professional esports teams? I have to admit I am really only a fan of Overwatch esports. To my knowledge there aren't any women currently playing professional Overwatch. There could be a larger population of pro women players in other games that I don't know of but the perception is that pro esports is dominated by men. Why?

I understand why women don't play pro traditional sports with men and have their own women pro leagues but I don't see any reason why women couldn't compete along side the men in esports.

I heard one Overwatch podcast talk about this subject but their reasoning I didn't agree with and that was that there aren't many women esports players because women gamers get harassed/trolled too much and it is too much of a hassle for women in exports to climb the ranks. Do you agree with this theory?

I don't. But maybe I am wrong.

Side note... My wife is so much better than I am at Overwatch.

I'd look into some evolutionary psychology theories if I were you. Biology, reproductive dynamics, brain wiring... Have fun.

The harassing/trolling does kinda make it a difficult environment... Some people can just be so childish :( However, for me it would be the amount of time that you have to invest just to go pro. Spending most of the day playing league/any other game would drive me insane...

I understand your point but guy or girl both would need to spend a lot of time honing their skill to become pro. That is not gender specific. I feel that no matter what gender you are if you have a desire to become pro then the time needed to do it is to be expected.
