Nintendo released their June financial year sales figures, with the Nintendo Switch reaching 19.67 million units sold. Releasing in March 2017, the Nintendo Switch is now one of Nintendo's better selling consoles. For comparison, the Wii U sold 13.56 million units and the Gamecube sold 21.74 million units. This highly successful period is the best launch phase of any current generation console. As Twitter user GoNintendoTweet points out, the PS4 sold 20.2 million units worldwide in around 16 months while the Switch sold 19.67 million units in around 15 months. However it is important to note that the PS4's first 16 months contained two Q3 holiday periods, releasing in November, whereas the Switch only had one. According to industry analyst Dr. Serkan Toto, "Nintendo typically generates 50%+ of their yearly sales in Q3 (Oct-Nov-Dec). Q1 and Q2 are typically weak for all console makers." This makes the outstanding sales figures all the more significant for Nintendo.
Nintendo also released their software and games sales figures, as of June 30, 2018. In total, 86.93 million units of software was sold for the Nintendo Switch. Unsurprisingly, the overwhelming success of first party titles has directly lead to these financial figures. According to Nintendo's data, the top 10 highest selling Nintendo Switch games were Nintendo exclusive titles. However, it is important to note that these numbers include sales made through console bundles. While this isn't a new sales strategy for Nintendo, with Wii Sports becoming the highest-selling game of all time after being bundled with the Wii, it explains the sales of titles like 1-2-3 Switch, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Mario Odyssey over 'killer-apps' like Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
