A Beautiful Homage to All Things Cynical: South Park, The Fracture But Whole

I member when South Park was taboo as a kid. No parents would allow us to watch the show during any sleepovers. It was the first time I heard the f-bomb on TV, alongside other words typically reserved for back alleys and adult forums. As I grew up and as the show matured, I began to really appreciate South Park’s satirical eye on the world. I was constantly reminded how much offensive comedy was needed in the world, one that took things to the extreme for us so that we could properly understand the lives we are mired in.

Especially in this climate of policed political correctness, its even more refreshing than in past years to watch the polymath genius of Trey Parker and Matt Stone. They’ve gone even further than the TV show to produce award-winning productions such as “The Book of Mormon” on Broadway and most recently, incredibly savory video games.

The first one was South Park: The Stick of Truth, released in 2014 and the 2nd came out just last year as South Park: The Fractured But Whole. I’m several hours deep into The Fracture But Whole (luv dem puns) and I’m too excited not to give my 2-cents.

First off, let’s get this out of the way - if you’re a fan it’s no question. Not only the game faithfully follow the type of humor that SP watchers have come to love, it is a collage of major South Park skits and scenarios. You’ll find all the usual suspects and their environments stitched together in one fairly substantial open world. If you want to walk down memory lane, run to buy this latest release.

If you’re prone to a bit of offense and social triggers, there’s nothing to see here. If you haven’t like South Park before, nothing of this game will change your mind.

For those interested in the game as whole with neither prejudice for or against the game, I’m sure most will still get a good kick our of this rendition. Battles are varied and very timely. There’s a great amount of choice, variation, and sub-things to achieve throughout the 20 or so supposed hours of adventuring. The underlying narratives can be enjoyed without prior knowledge of the show, though many parts are bound to be a bit confusing.

So as a quick suggestion, for anyone who thinks they might be interested in the content, I recommend a rental just to try out one of the best remakes of a TV show in game form. I can’t push it much further than that as there is a good amount of insider joking and many many many poop/fart scenarios. Even for a fan like me, the gameplay itself would be a bit tiresome and repetitive without the promise of familiar surprises throughout the game.

Regardless of whether you decide to play it or not, this is no doubt a major step forward for diversifying the gaming genre with well-known narratives and a whole new approach to engagement with greater life.
