Games you should play before you die #1 - Unreal / Unreal Gold

Greetings Steemians! I'm initiating a new series here on Steemit, this time regarding gaming. I'll suggest you steemians some games I've played and I consider being good or great. I hope you like this new series and come play along!

Unreal early cover art. People were kinda aggressive on the reviews back then haha

Background and history

The first game we'll talk about in the series is Unreal and its expansions. Unreal is a first person shooter released in 1998, developed by Epic Games - Epic Megagames at the time, creator of the also successful Jazz Jackrabbit series, Digital Extremes - big share sold to the Chinese group Leyou and Legend Entertainment - acquired by GT Interactive, now Atari Inc. and is currently considered a cult classic of gaming.

It's one of the few games released last century that possesses an active avid fan base and a live multiplayer network, where there are still live servers and mods being developed by the community. The game runs on the earliest version of the Unreal Engine, developed from the Quake Engine.

This game was literally the one that put me into serious gaming. It's a great first person shooter, with incredible map and sound design, an engaging story and a persistent and still live multiplayer, with great support for modding. The game received universal critical acclaim and that's for a very notable reason: it's one of the greatest shooters of all time.

Plot

Simple enough, you get to be in the shoes of Prisoner 849, sentenced to life and being transferred to a prison colony aboard the Vortex Rikers, a transport vessel. Suddenly the ship is caught in the gravitational field of an uncharted planet and crashes on it.

This is a screenshot of the very first level, Ny Leve falls. The graphics may seem outdated now, but that was called "cutting edge" back then. Still, there's some freshness you don't get in modern games.

Badly hurt, the protagonist must survive the dangers of the planet and the vicious Skaarj, a race of reptilian humanoids that swarm the planet and enslaved the peaceful Nali, a race of tall four armed extremely religious aliens that believe that a Prophet that fell from the skies will free them from their captors.

These are the Skaarj. Bulky, muscular, but extremely agile, these creatures can fire projectiles from their fists. And don't even think about letting them get close, or they'll rip you apart.

The expansion pack, Return to Na Pali features the Prisoner 849 having to return to the planet for the Operation Talon Hunter, an expedition authorized by the UMS - Unified Military Services, an organization that coordinates and commands the unified military of a future Earth (Terra), to retrieve the data files of a cruiser that undergone the same fate as the Vortex Rikers.

_These are the Nali. They're just some good people caught within the evil rule of the big bad lizards. It's up to you to lead them to freedom!

During the levels you'll find several weapons, items and pieces of the story to understand what's going on around and with the help of a Translator, you can read some writings at walls, panels and log books to know more details of the story. I won't spoil the fun for you people. Go out there and play it! It's totally worth it.
