Picked this puppy up for £20 on eBay ages ago and I finally got round to playing it. Where do I begin? I'm already in love with this game. Not even halfway through the story and I have already experienced a spectra of emotion from joy and laughter to shock and awe.
The main story has the guise of a serious and gritty endeavour with moments of dark humour peppered in (almost like a Tokyo Fargo). However the facade the game pulls will from time to time let off for a while showcasing these bizarre and bombastic encounters. The Yakuza games always manage to dance precariously over the line that separates seriousness and satire.
For an open world game the world isn't necessarily large but rather dense, not just in an exploring sense but also from a gameplay perspective. There is always something to do be it bowling, managing a cabaret, baseball, karaoke, dancing, pool, darts , you name it. What I just mentioned isn't even the tip of a snowflake that you'd find on the tip of an iceberg. You'll occasionally bump into enemies that you'll have to fend off using combat thats easy to get the gist of but never becomes repetitive.
Don't even get me started on the substories (or "sidequests"). These are what give the game its wacky persona. The substories are essentially side missions you can undertake which lead into their own narrative. Some of the stories had me in stitches. Japanese humour among the masses can seem rather peculiar or even "in-your-face" at times but I assure you the comedic timing and dialogue is on par with movies like "The Big Labowski" and "Monty Python".
TLDR: This game is a classic
