Things Console Peasants Say Episode #2 - Gaming on a computer takes work compared to an console

Welcome everyone to the new series that will be starting here at Kralizec Gaming and it will be about the things console peasants like to say about consoles or computers that aren't necessarily true.

Today's topic is the console peasants claim that gaming on a computer is harder to achieve compared to a console.

So let's start by analyzing what you need to do to play on a modern console.

  1. Buy the console (and potentially a TV)
  2. Buy the games you want to play
  3. Connect the console to the TV and gamepad
  4. Wait for updates to your consoles operating system to be installed
  5. Install the games
  6. Play.

Now this seems pretty straight forward right? Nothing you really need to do apart from installing the game, which essentially these days means either putting the disc in and waiting a bit or just clicking a button and waiting for the game to download.

I'd say that altogether, this process will take about 2 - 3 hours for your initial setup.

Now let's compare this to how you set-up your average, similarly priced computer.

  1. Buy the computer (and potentially a monitor)
  2. Buy the games you want to play
  3. Connect your PC to your TV, keyboard and mouse
  4. (optional) wait for the updates to your PCs operating system to be installed (or schedule them for any time when you don't plan on using your PC)
  5. Install Steam
  6. Install the games
  7. Play

Now I can hear the peasants screaming already. But you have to build your PC! No. No you don't. Either you can buy a completely pre-built system or you can have someone (usually the company you are buying from) build this system for you for about 20 - 40 dollars (depending where you live). Now new screams appear But pre-built systems are more expensive! Funny thing. The competition in the PC market is so huge, that a lot of pre-builts systems are actually cheaper then if you were to build that PC yourself. That because the companies then get bulk prices. So these arguments can be completely disregarded.

And now we see that PC gaming actually has one and one third extra steps compared to console gaming. You need to connect one extra peripheral compared to a console and you need to install Steam. Both of these steps are extremely easy, one consists of plugging in one extra USB device and the other consists of installing one extra program to your computer.

On top of that, you aren't forced to wait for updates to go through before you actually can get your system running, so depending on your internet speeds and whether you choose to download a game or install it from a disc, you might actually get to play games on your PC quicker then on a console.

So... No. PC gaming isn't hard work. And even if you do CHOOSE to build your own PC, that's not hard. Nothing really fits anywhere else then it's supposed to go and even small children are capable of doing it. And remember my dear peasants - the people who build their computers are enthusiast for the most part and enthusiasts aren't the average user.

Ya, at this point there's really nothing holding anybody back. My brother built his own computer five years ago and it still runs like a dream, handles video games great, and only cost in the range of $500 when he built it!

Consoles make less and less sense these days to me... when will the distinction go away? Or will we always have these arbitrary gaming machines called "consoles"?

Agreed, PC gaming is much better, and the churn on a new PC is so much less than a new console!

Great post !

Building a PC is really easy these days, like putting Legos together. After you build one, you will want to build more! I go on pcpartpicker all the time just to put a system build together.

Yeah, maybe it is cheaper to buy a console instead of a really good pc. but on which is easier and more difficult...i think they are the same
