When Nintendo released the NES they created a mascot that really sold the system and Super Mario was that mascot. When Sega decided that they wanted to have their hand in the ring of console development they had a bunch of different mascots and none of them really worked out. But when they released the Sega Genesis Sonic the Hedgehog was the mascot they were looking for. Today we're going to take a look at what is considered one of the greatest games ever released on the Sega Genesis. Let's find the negatives.
Sonic the Hedgehog is a platforming game that's very similar to Super Mario Brothers. You go from one end of the world to the other and try to complete the stage as fast as you can. The only difference really is that Super Mario isn't really that hip. But in the ‘90s Sonic the Hedgehog well he was pretty cool. Sega was really trying their best to make this mascot the mascot of the ‘90s and for the most part it really worked. While Mario did have an impression on a lot of gamers in the ‘90s Sonic was just reaching to a different crowd. I'm a fan of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 but personally I never really owned the first Sonic the Hedgehog when I had my Sega Genesis growing up because it just wasn't as good as the other games.
One of the things I don't like about Sonic the Hedgehog is that it's not really fun to attack enemies. Now while in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and even Sonic and Knuckles they improved the way that Sonic attacked enemies in Sonic 1 you have to always engage a spin dash. While in the spin dash you can roll into an enemy or jump in the air and just hit them but sometimes it doesn't work because a lot of the enemies have armor plating on them or spikes all over their body and because of that it makes attacking enemies not really that fun. Sometimes it works and sometimes it fails and a lot of the times it feels kind of unfair. The first negative is that attacking enemies in Sonic the Hedgehog is just not fun. In many video games the boss battles are always a highlight. They change up the gameplay and make it a little bit different but really fun to go from boss battle to boss battle. But in Sonic the Hedgehog they're just plain. Every time Eggman, or Dr. Robotnik, comes into the scene it's really just monotonous. It's very repetitive and it's not very interesting. In fact most of the boss battles are just boring to watch. They just repeat the same sequence over and over again and they don't really provide any great challenge. Sure there are a couple changes here and there that make the boss battles a little bit more interesting but the overall majority of the boss battles are just kind of plain and simple. So the second negative for this game is that the boss battles are plain.
The way that Sonic controls doesn't really lend itself well to the way that they've designed the levels. They're designed more like Super Mario levels but Sonic is not really designed for that kind of gameplay. There's a bunch of stages that repeat the same sequences over and over again without feeling like they've changed much. In fact after the Green Hill Zone I really didn't enjoy playing most of the levels. When you play Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 the levels are just better designed and it feels so much more interactive. These levels are just boring. They don't really feel like they were designed for Sonic the Hedgehog. So the next negative is that the levels are pretty boring. While Sonic was made for speed in the first Sonic the Hedgehog he's really slow. Most of the levels are not really designed for speed. There's these blocks all over the place and other poor designs that kind of stop you from ever gaining any truly fast momentum. Unlike in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 & 3 where you really feel like you're going fast in Sonic the Hedgehog 1 it's really designed more like a Super Mario Brothers ripoff so you're not really moving very fast. In a lot of the instances the momentum just slows down to a standstill and you're just jumping from one ledge to another. In some instances it doesn't make the game very fun and it makes it feel incredibly slow. So shockingly the fourth negative is Sonic is slow.
While the game isn't terrible, there's a lot of fun things to do, honestly it's not as good as the other Sonic games that were released later on. It's also not as good as the other Mario games that were being released around this time period. While Sonic the Hedgehog had an impact on all the kids that bought a Sega Genesis at the time nowadays I don't think Sonic the Hedgehog is really that good of a game. Back then if you had compared it with what Nintendo was releasing well it didn't really stand out. With Sonic the Hedgehog 2 you can see an improvement with the design of Sonic and you can see that they're really going for something different that Mario wasn't doing. But in the first game Sonic the Hedgehog doesn't feel like Sonic the Hedgehog. It feels like kind of slightly faster Super Mario Brothers and it just doesn't work.
Well done thanks for sharing.

Sonic, even at it's best, at it's best is easy to find a lot of negatives in, they're flawed games, even at their best.
Though at their best you really can't bring yourself to care about those flaws.
