A factory-sealed copy of Super Mario Bros. sold on eBay yesterday for over $30,000. This is one of the most common games on the NES, so this is a head-scratching development.
Why did this go for so much? Honestly, I have no idea and can only speculate. Many other factory sealed copies are available on eBay ranging from a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars. Bidding looks legitimate and the seller is a well-established and respected seller with over 40 thousand feedback score.
Perhaps bidding frenzy caught hold of some people. Maybe a factory sealed copy from a trusted seller is worth that much more to bidders? Who knows, but its one of the craziest prices I've ever seen a single game fetch in my years of being in this hobby.
Wow, $30k is way too much money to spend on this in my opinion. I get why collectors are willing to pay some extra money for an unopened version of their childhood game, but this is out of control!

I won't pretend I understand collector mentality whatsoever. That isn't to say retro games aren't amazing, but isn't the experience the game rather than the packaging? Maybe if you consider the packaging as limited supply original artwork by an iconic painter, the price makes a little more sense. Either way, seems wild to me at that price.

Its the same for any type of media, the inherent value of the original vs. the practicality of a reproduction. I can buy a first edition of Bram Stoker's Dracula for several thousand dollars, or I can download it to my Kindle for free. One is very limited while the other is infinite, even though they're both the same product.

If i had 30k to spend and was a big fan and the game meant something to me, hell yeah i'd buy it

Stuff like this is why I fully expect the next "gaming crash" to be on the collector's side of the equation, not the regular release of new games and the like. I do have to say when you consider the cost of making a new game on a new console, it is hard to not think that could lead to another crash too.
I think collectors paying stupid amounts of money for rare collectibles will crash first though.
