I don't think Earthbound is rare at all. I think it is overpriced, and too many anime weeabos like it and to be honest. It annoys me. The game isn't even that fun.

I fall into the category of people that didn't really know what Earthbound was until Nes was a playable character on Super Smash. I know it is a classic but not enough people I know love it to make it really memorable for myself.

Earthbound is the very definition of a cult classic. It's not popular with the mainstream, but has a huge fanbase. Maybe it's the case that someone thought the game was so good that it was worth that much, like you suggested.

I have a lot of good memories of playing earthbound with my brothers growing up on our SNES. It was even some kind of delux version and came with a really nice game guide book that had awesome claymation style illustrations of every character in the game. Sadly we don’t have either anymore as my older brother sold them at a yard sale for $20 so he could buy himself a guitar, lol!
