Getting Over It

I will beat this game. Not today(got a busy week, can’t be gaming right now), maybe not soon, but someday.

This game is simple on its surface, even if a bit surreal. You are a man stuck in a cauldron and handed a sledgehammer. Your task? Use that sledgehammer to climb a mountain of free assets all haphazardly thrown together. Simple, right?

Wrong. The controls are purposefully clunky, and the autosaving doesn’t maintain checkpoints; anytime you lose progress, it’s permanent. And there is an almost constant threat of losing progress. There are several places where it is incredibly easy to fall, and most people do.

But there is something kind of special about an uncompromisingly difficult game. Rather than coasting along to victory that is assured given you spend enough time, you don’t have that guarantee with Getting Over It. You need to not only beat each obstacle, you have to beat each obstacle in order. If you fall, you must go through previous obstacles.

This game is not for those who don’t want a challenge. I’ve played it a decent amount, and I’ve only gotten about halfway through, judging by the let’s plays I’ve watched of other people. It requires patience and resolve, all for no reward beyond the satisfaction of beating a challenge.

If you are easily angered, and are known for throwing controllers in rage, do not play this game. It isn’t worth your sanity. But for me… I will beat it. All I need to do is get over it.
