Mega Man X4 Masochist Challenge Part 11 - The Penultimate Stage, This is Where it Gets Troublesome

Goddamn, this is where things get hairy. The first 20 seconds here were an odyssey in and of themselves.

It took an unbelievable amount effort and planning to both A) discover that route, and B) pull it off in practice.

I'm a little annoyed about how I couldn't come up with an alternative to hanging up at the beginning of the stage to charge up the X-Buster before moving, but it was necessary since I needed to take out the missile enemy before it managed to fire at me. His attacks load immediately as he spawns into the screen, so I needed to have my shot ready before then.

What follows is a tightly choreographed show.

Everything here attacks fast, so I'm left with no choice but to be faster.

The performance is only 20 seconds long, but I sat down and thought about that for so long. It's not like the segment is that cumbersome on paper, so I don't know. It just hung me up for some reason.

The fight with Double is up next, and his yelling during the fight is so damn annoying, I decided to give you some music to listen to, instead.

The funny thing about Double is the fact that he's actually legitimately easier when only using the X-Buster. The way his AI works is such that he uses his more threatening attacks when being attacked by the special weapon he's weak to. So, the fight was a breather, really.

Not that it's a cake walk, or anything. And what you see in the video is far from an optimal battle against Double. It's just I got so few attempts at him after failing the first 20 seconds for a hundred times over, my nerves were pretty much shot by the time I got to Double. You can really see me being careful there.

Yeah, I could cheat and record multiple playthroughs and edit together an optimal video, but that's bullshit, and that's not what this is about.

The nervousness carries out to the second area, as well.

You can see me really screw up with the first of many missile enemies, and boy, it almost costs me. I tried to aim my shot so that it would take out both of the missiles, but I missed the other one. Only barely was I able to notice it in time to drop down.

The rest of it went down without too much trouble.

For whatever reason, in general, the second area didn't give me as much trouble as the first area did - even though it's by far the more difficult area of the two. Uneven terrain, and enemies placed in awkward spots - who are quick on the draw to boot.

I'm not super happy with the fight against General, either, but it is what it is. I was just concentrating on not taking a hit and getting that damn thing recorded finally. But there are definitely opportunities for me to fire more optimally there.

But no use crying about it now.

Next up is the final stage - including 8 boss rematches, and the final boss.

It will be all pain, little substance. Look forward to it.

Holy crap dude, if that is you not optimal, I don't even know. It's incredible watching you get through the second stage without taking a hit at all. I love watching you play this game because I get to see it go past but never have to endure the absolutely maddening frustration of having to try and do it myself.

Hah, yeah. You’re the lucky one. :)
