Ultima Online... Anyone out there play this fantastic game when it first came out?

I have compiled a nifty little list of some folks on the Steemit platform who have already chatted about UO and I wanted to invite everyone to chat about Ultima Online here in this thread as well as on Whaleshares discord : https://discord.gg/dcTe7q

Ultima Online was the most ambitious MMORPG of its time. In fact lots of people argue that even today, some 20 years after the launch of Origin System's UO; no game that ever dared to fly as high. The reason for this is because as a business model, as a software ecosystem, as a game - Ultima Online is perceived in many ways, to be a failure. The game was plagued with swamped servers, high ping times, account credential issues, bugs and ravenous deadly Player Killers. I mean ravenous like they didn't just pop up on you in your favorite mine, forest or dungeon and kill you. They killed you, your dear pack llamas and they took all of your ingots and tools, weapons and earnings. Then they chopped you into pieces and insulted your ghost it was BAD. Many players were driven out of the game by other players called "Griefers"

The reputation system built into the game was unable to produce any sense of accountability or justice. It was eventually considered a major design flaw to have open-world free pvp that included the potential for deep personal loss. When you died in Ultima - all of your equipment was there on the ground on your dead body for anyone to loot! So while simultaneously in a game world of limited resources: one where you could go to the orc fortress and "grind" out gemstones, gold and magic gear. Or you could go to the orc fortress and farm the people who have been there farming for an hour or two each. The difference in reward for time invested could look like this : 1,000 gold per hour for farming orcs VS. (1-2)*1000 gold / (.125-.5) hours. Even the most modest number 4,000 gold per hour + you dont have to compete for spawns.

But they DIDN'T have a blockchain =-)

Even using a simple set of weekly threads on steemit we could verify and vet users, keep a list of reports and use crowdthink / witnessing to moderate and uphold shard rules, and not only that but your reputation, influence and assets on Steemit are DIRECTLY connected with your behavior in game. Could this fix the design problems within Ultima Online and generate another Ultima Online golden era? This is what we must discuss =-)

Game theory + Steemit (or relevant blockchain) + decentralized platform for incentivizing UO = WTF who knows. Its research that has yet to be conducted!

I played UO when it was available in Hong Kong. Those was the time that you still need to buy the game in you local game store.
It was because of UO that I had to setup my own broadband line and broadband router to ensure best network performance. I had to setup software router on my PC to share the broadband Internet line, there was no box router available yet.
I still like the system of marking your rune for teleporting, keeping your teasures in you home, try very hard not to be killed by others, etc. Good old days!

seriously the good old days I miss it... the golden age of ultima

Interesting one indeed

Used to play on a number of player run shards back in the day. It was fun but the usual problems of the server shutting down because the admins couldn't support the upkeep was a problem.

Which player shards? I've played on In Por Ylem, Metropolis, Renaissance and a few others I love this game - I think it might be FIXED by the blockchain.

I think i played on metropolis, that name sounda familiar. The one i spent the most time on was Zulu Online.

I think it's long gone though but i agree that if steem could be used to support the shars, that would be fantastic.

Whether its UO or another game it looks very very promising

I still remembered that I started with Ultima 4 on PC, then all the coming versions of Ultima, and finally jumped into the online gaming world of UO.
In order to play Ultima 4, I had to put my English dictionary next to my PC all the time, being a non-English speaking secondary school student, it was quite some effort I put in. Not to menton the "native" language in Britainnia invented by Lord British!
Good thing is I learn English without depending too much on our school. That's an asset to me.

Thats a big advantage! Exactly the kind of thing I am wondering about... if people are so engaged they are willing to learn a second language.

Think about it : if the moderators and GMs were paid through threads on the steemit platform it could generate alot of engagement as well as provide a secure, verified community based on stake. If you damage the playershard community's integrity you risk influence, money and reputation on Steemit! And we verify users (2-4 weeks and a level of reputation or something) and force them to keep at least 50 SP loaded it could change the social climate of the game entirely. That's my theory anyways

Please find guys for this project I would love to play on sphere ultima online or an osi clone again

steeminator! the good news is im actively hunting people who might want to participate! You were one of them so I figured I would drop you a line - know any people who would want to play?

Totally lost connection with my ultima online buddies I was playing 7 years ago

Yeah for sure, I have a childhood best friend and my older brother down to play - my current best friend and 1 or 2 other people =-)

will u pop into discord so we can chat ? https://discord.gg/ysMjWe

I wish I'd played UO - got into asherons call instead and it was a lot less densely packed with people so easier to isolate, which was probably less fun.

Nonetheless UO lore is hella entertaining - I've read about the assassination of Lord British enough times to be on par with an actual historical event.

thanks make sure you hop in whaleshare discord I am there all the time
