Let's talk Magic | My First M19 DraftsteemCreated with Sketch.

Good mornin-afternoo-vening, dear Magic players and related afficionados, welcome to this quick rundown of my first M19 draft!

Initially I wanted to get into making a Goblins deck, because I had the Volley Veteran quite early but then the Goblins stopped appearing so I was stuck with only a few goblin cards.

So once that happened and seeing that I wasn’t getting any Mythics whatsoever, or really any strong card to build a deck around, I decided to go for full on aggression and control.

This meant both from a deck-building perspective but also a gemeplay perspective. You can have an aggressive/control deck, but you also have to be playing it as such.

This meant sacrificing my Dismissive Pyromancer’s to use its second ability in order to eliminate a major threat, using Dwindle to basically reduce the enemy’s largest creature to a one-use Defender and making proper use of Trumpet Blasts and Uncomfortable Chill.

Uncomfortable Chill is a great way of cutting a massive attack down to size - especially if they’re using lots of smaller creatures. Using Uncomfortable Chill can mean that you’re minimizing the amount of damage you take but with the extra added bonus of drawing a card as well, which is always a good thing.

Lightning Mare proved to be extremely useful, especially when you get it out on the second turn.

Diamond Mare proved to be a very good artifact creature to have in play. It offers a decent ⅓ for 2 mana and also one to life whenever you cast something of the color you choose.

I used it alongside a Goblin Instigator, its token and a Goblin Motivator, which I Trumpet Blasted, which turned my four, one-power creatures, into four three-power creatures.

I have to say that the Havoc Devils always made it onto the battlefield and they were always a solid threat and problem for the opponent to have to block or deal with. I did get to use the Fire Elementals but unfortunately I didn’t get to use my Lava Axes, AT ALL!

Instead, the Lava Axes were used against me, TWICE, in the same round, by an opponent using Chaos Wand.

So the deck was definitely very Red, but you notice a bit of a splash of Blue.

I have learned that when it comes to Drafting, having as much removal as possible is generally a great idea.

As such, I made use of my Essence Scatter, Dwindle and Uncomfortable Chill, but I was thinking during my last match that I should really take the Cancels out, because I didn’t get to use them during my previous two matches and would maybe benefit by getting more creatures in my deck.

And that’s when it so happened that I had a lot of blue mana on the table and got to use both of the Cancels, in consecutive turns, to keep the board clean so I could attack without problems.

So eventually, the deck proved to be not bad. I managed to win that last match and went 1-2 with the other two. Keeping in mind, I have nothing super-special in my deck and my opponents had some of the mythic dragons or the Resplendent Angel. So, progress!

I did draft one other cool card, but it was White so I couldn’t put it into the deck. That card is Isolate, which seems to have a bit of potential in some very specific casual decks.

And now for the super special promo foil! Desecrated Tomb

And for whatever reason, my FLGS gave us another foily!
