New Information Released for Total War: WARHAMMER 2

Hey everyone, not sure how many Total War fans out there but wanted to share some new information was recently released for the upcoming game, Total War: WARHAMMER 2. This is the sequel to last years Total War: WARHAMMER, which easily became my favorite Total War game. Lots of things to be excited about if you've played the first Total War: WARHAMMER game or if you're looking to jump into the series! For some basic information on the new game, check out the Steam store page.

  • Factions can settle anywhere - In the first game, factions were restricted to settling in certain location. For example, The Dwarfs/Orcs could only settle in mountain settlements but were unable to settle in Empire/Vampire Count territories. This restriction  has been removed allowing you to capture any settlement you want. While I did enjoy the more lore-friendly restrictions in the first game, I think this will work well for the combined "Mega Campaign" if you own both games.
  • Vortex Objectives - This is one of the most interesting additions. The Great Vortex is an objective in the New World that the new races will be competing over. Some races will be trying to destroy it and other will be trying to stabilize it. The the first time in a Total War game, the AI can actually beat you by completing this objective. There will be a progress bar displaying everyone's progress on the objective. Once a faction completes it, a final quest battle is triggered. If the AI completes it before you do, you'll fight them in this end game battle and have a change to defeat them and continue on. If they win, its game over.
  • New Battle Map Types - There's several new maps types being added that I know many Total War fans have been missing from the first TW:W game. There's not going to be any town battles like from previous Total War games, but the Steam Workshop page is already full of custom maps that help that problem. Creative Assembly has also said they're focused on a bigger variety for their battle maps, which I feel like they got a little stale in the first game.
    • Choke Points
    • Bridge battles
    • Fortress Gate siege battles- This is a new settlement type as well. It requires you to own the fortress gate or be in alliance with someone to pass through. They'll be positioned in key spots on the campaign map that allow passage to different regions of the map. If someone passing through doesn't have passage a siege battle will occur.
  • Rogue Armies - These new independent armies roaming the map can pull in units from any of the factions. There's one example given of a goblin beast master, who's army is made up of all beast units, pulled in from Greenskin, Lizardmen and other factions. Some of these rogue armies have been pulled into the game from Games Workshop literature.
  • Treasure Hunting - This is a new option for ruins, which had the option in the first game of being colonized. Treasure hunting will give you a series of options to choose from that can either lead you to getting a bonus (gold or be granted new units) or you might have a negative outcome (receive Chaos corruption)
  • New Naval gameplay - Unfortunately, Creative Assembly has already confirmed that real time naval battles will not be in the new game. They have added more things at sea to make things a little more interesting when traveling the ocean. They're adding hazards like reefs or storms that can change course to keep you on your toes.
  • Minor Settlements have 6 slots instead of 4 - Should allow for more flexibility when planning out settlements and supposedly will help the AI build out more useful settlements.
  • Rebalancing Magic and changing skill trees for Magic users- I'm looking forward to see what kind of changes they do here. Magic in WARHAMMER lore is extremely powerful, but in the first game felt like a little bit of a let down.
  • Dragons get a new Breath attack - Get excited! All dragons (TW:W1 and TW:W2) will get a new ranged attack ability: Breath, and it's also based on the type of dragon that the breath will be.
  • All of the 4 new factions will have 2 legendary Lords and each will have a unique starting position. - They started to do give the DLC factions LL's their own starting position in TW:W1. As a big co-op player, this is great news to know all of the new factions will be co-op friendly right out of the gate.
  • New multiplayer mode, Free For All - Only 4 players at launch. The winner is based on unit kills and total damage.

Lots more information out there on TW:W2 from last week but that's a good chunk of it. Here's some new articles that you can read up on all of the new information.
