It's taken me a while to actually start this, mainly because I was away from my computer for about a week, but now it's finally here. This is going to be a short introductory post mainly containing pictures, most of which are just a mess of ASCII... mmm... ASCII.
The Saga of Geshud Keng
Chapter 1 - Breaking Ground
You have arrived. After a journey from the Mountainhomes into the forbidding wilderness beyond, your harsh trek has finally ended. Your party of seven is to make an outpost for the glory of all of Lasgancerol. There are almost no supplies left, but with stout labor comes sustenance. Whether by bolt, plow, or hook, provide for your dwarves. You are expecting a supply caravan just before winter entombs you, but it is Spring now. Enough time to delve secure lodgings, ere the dingoes get hungry. A new chapter of dwarven history begins here at this place, Geshud Keng, "The Fortress of Steam". Strike the earth!
It has been a long journey for our seven intrepid explorers, from the home of the Tan Lens civilisation of dwarves to the Ordered Jungles of the Continent of Gliding, but now it's finally time to set up camp and start building the greatest fortress Thur Nitem has ever seen.
Our group of dwarves call themselves the Asmel Keng, "The Merchants of Steam Steem", and have named this new outpost Geshud Keng, "The Fortress of Steam Steem".
Let's check in on them, shall we?
Ugh, I can't see anything here. Enhance...
Enhance...
I can almost see them, enhance one more time.
That's it! Perfect. Now we can see our dwarves in the moment right before they realise just how much hard work lies ahead of them. They all look so happy and full of life... for now at least.
Before we start the proceedings we should perhaps introduce some of our star dwarves. If you want to see your name counted among these heroes of dwarfdom just leave a comment on this post and I'll arrange the rest.
Today we have only three dwarves to introduce, so, here they are:
1. TheWalrus
And here is a picture of TheWalrus under a tree.
2. chasmic-cosm
Here's a picture of chasmic-cosm chillin' on the grass.
3. ggteixeira
Here's ggteixeira escorting a yak [Y] to the pasture.
It Begins
There they all go. They've taken the last steps of one journey and are now taking the first steps of a journey of a completely different kind. No longer will they have to survive in the wilds of Thur Nitem, now they must learn to tame them.
But before all that they must first break ground and build a solid foundation to support their dreams and ambitions.
There are many jobs to be done at this early stage, here are a few of the jobs being done by our star dwarves.
This looks to be ggteixeira gathering plants for food and drink.
And here's chasmic-cosm doing the indispensable job of mining.
Looks like TheWalrus is pulling his weight by hauling the mined rocks away from the entrance of the fortress.
There are many more jobs being done as we speak, and the work isn't going to cease anytime soon. The dwarves are currently working on some storerooms to store what little supplies they have left inside where they will be safer. After this is done they'll start building some bedrooms to get a good night's sleep for the first time in a long time, until then, they'll just have to be happy sleeping on the floor. Several temporary workshops are already set up and working to help for the first few months, after which they will be dismantled and relocated in the industrial district of the fortress once it's been finished. A dining hall is also on the agenda and should hopefully be finished around the same time as the bedrooms.
And I think that's about it for this update. Remember, if you want to be one of the dwarves undertaking this perilous endeavour to build the greatest fortress in dwarven history just leave a comment below. If you want a name other than your username, let me know.
Oh, and here's a picture of some of the animals we have:
There's two sheep [s], two yaks [Y], and a llama [L]. And don't they all just look so cute?
See you next time.
You're a brave soul going into the Dwarf Fortress! I get scared enough trying to find treasure in Brogue, where I've never gotten past floor seven. My pal Elijah is much better at these games.
If you name a dwarf after me, I'll be honored. You can just use my full username if that works for you. :-)

I've never played Brogue before, I guess I should check it out at some point. And, of course I'll name a dwarf after you.

I'd also recommend just googling Dwarf Fortress or, better yet, go to Bay 12 Games and download, for free, one of the greatest games ever created.

I may just do that. Your screenshots reminded me of gaming on my monochrome IBM AT from 1984. It was a hand-me-down that had no graphics at all, only ASCII. There was a decent version of ASCII centipede on there, though. And Zork, of course.

It's funny to think how far technology has progressed since the 80's and people are still making and playing ASCII games.

I think sometimes the development of fun gets lost in the pursuit of golly-gee-crazy-realistic graphics. Probably why the indie game scene is doing pretty well these days. Topic for another post, I guess...
