5400 RPM is very common for NAS and long term storage drives. There is nothing wrong with 5400 RPM drives for storage. Just wouldn't use them for applications and gaming. With the prices of SSD these days, there is almost no reason to use anything but SSD for operation system/applications/games.

I can agree with you there, except I'd like the prices for ssds to go down a bit more than they already have.
I've recently got a few 256gb ssds though after using both a 1 tb and 3 tb drive for a few years and they've made a pretty big difference. I was wanting to upgrade those two so I could move what I needed on to the new drives and use those either for other desktops as I need them or for NAS.

I wouldn't recommend them if you want top performance, but if you want cheap they are good.
For my NAS they only act as Raid1 boot disk and a few VMs, it's mostly the 15 SAS drives. I personally wouldn't use them in a workstation or game machine unless I was on a budget.
