"Gaming" desks are awful and whoever buys one should be ashamed

Now, if you're a normal person then you've not had the pleasure of seeing the kind of stupidity being peddled in the gaming sector. We have gaming furniture now... I mean, besides gaming chairs. There is such a thing as a gaming desk. A desk built for gaming. Now, I'm sure things are starting to spark in your head. A desk with specifically built in monitor mounts, discrete cable holes, USB hubs, huge keyboard and mouse trays maybe with their own built in illumination. Cup holders! Adjustable height! DVD racks! Joystick/Gamepad mounts. Headphone hooks! Yeah. No, that would actually be useful and worth the money. Instead, this is a gaming desk.

It has plastic edges so your stuff doesn't fall off, it's got two holes in it, and it's angled slightly . For that, you have to pay almost 600$. Now, to be fair, there is another for about the same price with motorized adjustable height.

And then we have this stupid, stupid piece of crap.

It's made by a company called Arozzi, that specializes in overpriced crap. It's single defining feature is a giant mousepad with three rough holes in it meant to help with wire management. It costs around 450$, and at least it's big. There are smaller variants of all these, all costing around 200$ and being too small for any practical use that a 50$ coffee table propped up on a bunch of bricks wouldn't be able to do just as well.

The foundation of my rage is that last year I really wanted to get a new desk. For a few years, I had been using a computer desk that was quickly outliving its usefulness, since it was made in an age when monitors weren't really wide, and weren't built to house computers cases properly in apartments with flooded basements where things can get really damp, and therefore unsafe to keep electricals on the floor. (Some steemit money is fixing this current issue, and for that I'm very thankful). Ignore the hardware on it, that's the old PC. I have since replaced the chair as well.

I spent weeks looking for a new desk, one that would let me do two things:

  1. Fit a PC with multiple monitors on it
  2. Have a branch I could use for filming shows so that I don't have to do it hunched over at a coffee table anymore

None of the "gaming" desks would fit, since they're not meant to actually be good for something. They're just flashy, for show, catering to people with more money than sense, which is what most stores around here are peddling. I searched high and low to find something similar to this:

But there wasn't anything like it in the country, and ordering one off Amazon would have pushed the price too high, with shipping, that is if they even shipped here. There wasn't any way I could get something as nice around here, so I settled for having one built out of off the shelf pieces. Two main bodies and a rounded connector. It's all wood, it's not as fancy as the one above, but here's the best part. It cost around 100$. And not only can it fit three 24 inch monitors on just one side (probably could fit 2x24 and a 27 if I had the budget), but the second piece I can use to film stuff, to keep equipment on, assemble puzzles, and for work in general. It's still a work in progress, though, as I still want to add a few things to it, like a dedicated headphone holder, a shelf on one side to store stuff on, maybe a gamepad mount under the main side, and I'll probably see about integrating a USB hub at some point, as now it's just taped onto one side.

Here are some snaps of it being assembled and in its current form.

Still, for what it cost (shipping included) and the sheer size it has, along with the versatility of it all, makes any kind of "gaming" desk seem like a bad joke. Moral of the story is as follows. If you want a "gaming" desk, go to a furniture factory and they'll make one for you to your specifications, or you can build one from the cheap modules they sell.

Mmmm :) I got my Arrozi so-called "gaming" desk at a price of about $300 on a Black Friday. It's true that the price is quite high, but similar to your situation, I couldn't find anything else cheaper, that would fit my needs. Just so you know, I'm not a gamer, but my work is done mainly at the pc, so it's important to have a comfortable desk.

I'm really satisfied with it to be honest. I didn't really care about the "giant" mousepad that came with it, but I found several advantages about it:

  • My elbows don't get cold and numb like before. My previous desk was made of some sort of cold wood that was numbing my arms.
  • If I spill some coffee on it, it's really easy to clean with a napkin and some wet cloth. You can even shower it if you want, it dries up in 10 minutes.
  • You don't have to use it if you don't wanna. You can just roll it and save it for later. But the wood underneath is quite cold.

The design is really simple and I love it. I found a cheaper (half price) IKEA desk with adjustable height and similar design, but it weighed a ton, it looked much chunkier and it was humongous. This one is not too small, not too big, just purrfect.

All in all, yes you're right - simpler, more sleek designed furniture is always more expensive, and sometimes it just doesn't make any sense :)

Congrats with your new desk though. It has much more value if you manage to build your own custom desk, exaclty as you want it. I'm not that handy, so I had to find other way :-D

Thanks. Glad the desk worked out for you. The standard price of it just made me laugh my face off.

True! But prices are relative. Just wait for a sale or a Black Friday if you really want a specific thing (desk in this case) and you'll sometimes even get it half price. Take that for a difference! :-D

The Arozzi one was 250$ on black friday but it's still too much. It is made of metal so it won't break. And has adjustable nuts at the bottom.
But if the mousepad gets dirty, you can't really replace it, I don't see it's use.
The first one looks awful though.
I would buy the same as you but I don't want to put the pc case on it, and if I put it on the ground it will absorb too much dust. Right now the case is on a small table near the desk.

Yeah, like most gaming stuff, desks are mostly just overpriced junk. Some ideas are actually pretty good though (holes for cables, for instance, I'd love to have some on my desk) but I really don't see how they can cost that much, they're not made of solid gold.

I really like your new workstation! Personally I'm a big fan of huge mousepads so I'd probably set the whole thing a bit differently, but I really like the new setup, especially with the dual monitor.

What the fuck is that shit? I'm sorry, I'm definitely no carpenter, but I sure as hell can make a better gaming table then that garbage. A regular PC desk works just fine if you ask me, and those can be as cheap as 50$, though I wouldn't really recommend those... but still, it's not just a giant mousepad for 600$

Desks are overrated. You are so right. Why would anyone spend hundreds of dollars on something that takes up more room than a refrigerator, weighs just as much, and doesn't even give you cold beer? I dumped my heavy computer desk a couple years, and never regretted it. Now I have handmade console table that is lightweight, narrow, and made of quality hardwood. If fits in my small bedroom, and I can even reach the window over it. Just big enough for a screen, keyboard, mouse, speakers, and a writing surface. Sorry I'm rambling. Simple modules from a furniture store are a good idea. This post just got me going. Thanks for sharing.

Yep. If you are a handy person or watch tutorials or ask for a little help from someone who knows how to do this, you can make it by your own way cheaper :)

I first need an apartment upgrade, before I can have enough space for a desk upgrade :))
