Welcome back everyone, Hope you all are in a good health.

Another post, another review of an old MS-DOS game, as usual, the game that I am going to talk about in today's post is a video game that belongs to the genre of platform video game. This game was released in 1994. It is a very old game. However, as you might already know that the purpose of my article that I post every day here in my blog is to discuss old games that were released before the year of 2000.

Because this is a very old game, I am sure that most of you at least have ever heard about the game. As well perhaps, there will be no one want to play this game anymore. However, I still want to write about it and hope that at least I could bring some good information to let you know what kind of games that were available or that was played by the people in the 90s. For you, who are interested to play to the game just to bring back your sweet old memories, do not worry, in this article, I will also give you information how you can set up your computer to play it. Or, I will also tell you where you can go to play it if you do not want to install it on your computer.

Then, without further a do, let start get ourselves familiar with the game or just recall our memories what is this game about.

Blackthorne video game is a cinematic platformer video game that was developed by Blizzard Entertainment. For the European market, the game was released with a different name which is called "Blackhawk". The game was released for several platforms in different years. The first release of the game is for MS-DOS and SNES in 1994, the following year, the game released the version for SEGA 2X. Then, later in 1996, the game was also released for MAC OS platform. As you can see in the image above, the image is a cover art of Blackthorne for SNES version. The art was drawn by Jim Lee. The video game now has become available as free download. Blizzard made it free in 2013.

In term of the storyline, Blackthorne video game is taking place on a planet called "Tuul". This planet has existed for a very long time without human knowledge. Tull people all this time are ruled over by a single shaman. The shaman is the only person who was blessed with all knowledge. The successor of the ruler named "Thoros" find the difficulties who to choose from his two sons as the successor of the ruler. With this dilemma, in order to solve the problem, he took his two sons to the desert and then he killed himself. His body later become two stones which is one is dark and another one is light. He gave each of the stones to his child and told them to rule their own kingdoms respectively.

Then, there will born two kingdoms in their world. The kingdom that was from the one son who get the light stones called kingdom of Androth, and the kingdom that was from the dark stones is called kingdom of Ka'dra'suul. The people of Ka'dra'suul reject their stone while the people of Androth respects theirs. The darkstone then transform into a monster because of the rejection. There were one of the people from ka'dra'suul named Sarlac, he gain so much power and form an army and lead them in order to destroy the kingdom of Androth. Knowing this, the king of Androth then send his son named Kyle to Earth to save his life and hide to lightstone for safe keeping.

20 year later, after the incident, Kyle have become a very well known military captain and mercenary on Earth. Kyle begins having some weird dream and also confronted by the magician from Androth called Galadril. In the dream, he was told that he need and it is the time to return to his own planet Tuul to save his people. And here, the game is begin from this story where Kyle will setting out to kill Sarlac and reclaim his throne.

Next, in term of the gameplay, the game is focused around the main protagonist character named Kyle "Blackthorne" Vlaros. The player will play the character to take revenge on Sarlac and his minions. The gameplay in this game involves a lot of platforming sequences. In the game, the player will control Kyle to navigate the environment involving climbing and run to find keys and items. Then the game will progress to the end of each maze or level. In Blackthorne, the combat will take the form of a gunfight. Both Kyle and the enemies have the capabilities to press against walls in order to avoid the incoming bullets. The primary weapon that Kyle use in the game is a shotgun. He also has the abilities to fire blindly behind himself. As the game progress, Kyle will get allies from Androthi and aid him to get an upgrade of his weapon, increasing the speed as well as the power of the gun.

The game will have seventeen levels in total. The levels is divided into four areas which are The mines of Androth, Karrellian Forrest/Swamps, Wasteland Desert, and Shadow Keep. The game that was released for SEGA 2X version add another area, the fifth area which called Snowy Mountains. This fifth area will not be found in the other version of the game. The higher level of the game is played, the enemies will get stronger and so Kyle too, he will get stronger and better weapon.

You can do so with the help of DOSBox software. DOSBox is an emulator that will allow you to play DOS video game on your current computer.
