Shark and Whales. Gansbaai's the place. destination series #1

Did you ever want to see a Great White Shark or a Southern Right Whale?

Then you need to travel to Gansbaai to see them both. Just do your research as to the best times of the year to go. If you travel from Cape Town, then your trip will take you through some wonderful scenic landscapes and you will pass through Hermanus, another fabulous town for whale watching. The southern Cape coast offers wide open spaces and is far from the maddening crowd. A heritage site, Klipgat Cave, just outside De Kelders in the Walker Bay Nature Reserve was occupied as early as 85,000 years before present. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Gansbaai

Gansbaai is a small fishing town and popular tourist destination south of Walker Bay some 48 km south-east of Hermanus along the southern Cape coast. In the old days it was known as Gansgat, ie 'goose hole' after the wild geese found there. Today it is best known as a stopping off point to view the great white sharks at Dyer Island and as a whale-watching location. The best viewing area is from the rocky shores of De Kelders overlooking Walker Bay. Gansbaai is mainly a town that revolves around its fishing industry but these days a large part of its economy is derived from eco-tourism and holiday makers.

Below are a few photographs of the town. You won't find any architectural gems here or anything historic but just a glimpse as to the flavour of the town and some quirky things I've seen.
