According to the Bible the 'Original Sin' was that of Adam and Eve eating forbidden fruit from the 'Tree of Knowledge', but perhaps for me, long before drugs, loud music and loose women took hold, my own personal original sin occurred the day I first stumbled upon, purchased and opened, my very first packet of 'Garbage Pail Kids' trading cards.

Up until this moment, at the age of around ten, I'd been brought up on the wholesome tales of Disney classics, and the child-friendly writings of authors such as "Enid Blyton'. So you can imagine the fascination and deep sense of wrong-doing I experienced as I unwrapped these Garbage Pail Kids cards, popped that stick of cheap waxy pink gum into my mouth, and stared open mouthed in awe, at the hilariously vile imagery, that makes up the Garbage Pail Kids trading cards collection.

The History of the Garbage Pail Kids

Whilst many of the Garbage Pail Kids cards were just light hearted humor many crossed the line into the realms of extreme bad taste, which is exactly what made them so appealing to the youth of my generation, and with recent new releases, they to continue to appeal to new fans and old alike. The story of the Garbage Pail Kids trading cards (and numerous spin-offs) began in 1985, when the company 'Topps' released the first series featuring the artwork of Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist 'Art Spiegelman' to parody the 'Cabbage Patch Kids' a make of dolls that were incredibly popular at the time.

To date seventeen series's of the Garbage Pail Kids cards have been released within the U.S., plus additional series's of the cards have been released within countries such as Australia and Brazil where they have gone by such names as 'The Garbage Gang' and 'Gang do Lixo' respectively.

Each Garbage Pail Kids trading card features one of the gang in a bizarre and outrageous situation, often suffering from some painful fate. Two cards (and occasionally three) featuring the same artwork were released for each series, featuring different names as a word-play on their given scenario, and the fronts could be peeled off as stickers, whilst the backs could often be used as pieces of a puzzle to form a larger version of selected Garbage Pail Kids artwork. Later series's featured the illustrations of such artists as 'Jay Lynch', 'Tom Bunk', and 'James Warhola'.

Garbage Pail Kids - The Movie

In 1987 riding off the back of the huge success of the Garbage Pail Kids cards a 'live-action' movie was released, and whilst it is now sought out as a cult classic by some, it is widely regarded to be one of the most dire movies ever made.
Some comments regarding the Garbage pail kids movie from 'imdb.com':

  • Wow, Even worse than I remembered!!!
  • It should be illegal to make movies as bad as this.
  • Give me back my lost hour & a half

However, like myself, those who watched this movie as a child, despite having virtually no memory of the specifics of the story itself, remember it fondly...
