Now is a great time to take perennial hard wood cutting to gain free plants for next year.
I usually take cutting of any perennial plants i want for next year.
First you need to mix some potting compost for the cuttings. I use 50% potting compost and 50% perlite but if you don't want to buy perlite then just use grit or sharp sand.
Using 3 inch plastic pots, fill and lightly compact each pot. Then decide which plants you want to take cuttings from.
I'm choosing perennial fuchsias
Also Hydrangeas
Cut some decent lengths of cutting without flowers if possible. If they have flowers remove them. Then take leaf node cuttings IE cut just below a leaf joint and remove those leaves then cut above the next pair of leaves
Push the cuttings in the potting compost about 2 inches
Then cover them with a piece of heavy glass or clear plastic . I like to sit them in the plastic basket with the slotted sides as it allows air circulation and some rain to get in.
Check on them next spring to see what's taken and what hasn't. I think i got 80% success last year
