Pots Of Saffron On The Homestead

The Saffron plant is a fall blooming crocus plant the if planted using seeds, the first year they will grow bulbs. They have a purple flower and are called a Wild Greek Crocus or true crocus. A three-pronged style grows from the center of each flower. Each one of these prongs ends with a bright crimson stigma around an inch in length.  It grows best where hot and dry summer breezes sweep semi-arid lands. It will tolerate frosts as low as 14  degrees Fahrenheit.

Saffron is often dried and used latter for dye in foods and also in traditional medicine. The Chinese use it in treating the heart and liver and also consider it a good anti-depressant.

These are new Saffron plants and so far seem to look like they should. I bought them from a unknown to me  Herbal Nursery. Since Saffron is totally new to us, we are looking for signs at each step that we got what we ordered. So far, so good. We will be repoting it, as the tap roots are quite long.
