Edible Campus @ UNC Chapel HillsteemCreated with Sketch.

I was walking in the UNC Chapel Hill campus yesterday and came upon some veggies growing next to one of the libraries.

It turns out, UNC is doing this initiative called the Edible Campus. Read more about it here:

Basically, people volunteer to take care of some vegetables growing and the produce is available to anyone who would like to pick it as they are walking by. I think this is a very clever idea!

Here's some photos from my stop. I only visited the one location but apparently they have many. I may have to take some time and walk the campus and visit all of the locations.

Great idea.

Now this is an awesome idea! Upvoted and resteemed!

Thanks! I really thought it was a great idea too!

I love the caution sign! Just in case, you never know, you may die of tomato poisoning...Basically, it is a great idea to fill beds with vegetables instead of all flowers. This is a win-win for the university. They don't have to pay a gardener to do all the weeding of flower beds, the volunteers get to something they like, and anyone can enjoy the fruits of the labour.

Awesome idea!!

If they do that at more than one campus, is it considered a chain restaurant and therefor verboten in Chapel Hill?

I don't think so, there's definitely chain restaurants in chapel hill.

A joke.

There was some news a few years back when a restaurant moved out, because it was a chain and something about their business hours didn't work with local rules. It seemed, at the time, that their outrage against chain or big box stores was subjective.

Oh there's no doubt it's restrictive.... For example, the Duncan Doughnuts was very surprised that there's no drive-thru's allowed, only ones that are grandfathered in. Very strange town.

Ahh...that's what it was.

To be fair, driving in Chapel Hill is horrendous, so it shouldn't be made worse by people eating and waiting for traffic to move.
