Pondering Starting a Small Farm...

in garden •  7 years ago

My grandfather was a farmer, my great grandfather was a farmer and both my dad and grandma have had a green thumb my whole life. Ive really only ever grown tomatos and marijuana but im pondering starting a mini farm.

It would be great therapy for my health condition and maybe even bring in an income. Possibly wanting to partner with my dad. And im just thinking of different farm ideas.

Edibles or trees, landscaping plants or specialty species? Doing some research today on a target market and maybe a niche. I literally live in the perfect location for this and already own the land.

If you have any thoughts or ideas, tips or tricks, or anything in general on farming feel free to leave a comment ty :).

My property :)

I'm sure that lawn isn't doing the topsoil any favors. I'd recommend tilling it up, growing out some fat straw and cannabis to add some fiber to the soil, then start by straw bale gardening.

Permaculture is likely where you want to be and that means animal husbandry to do things smart and low effort. Cycling chickens and cows and maybe pigs through land you are remediating before your first grown or after a grow is important. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=polyface+farms+animals&page=&utm_source=opensearch

Crop selection is obviously important. Selecting based on ease of growth, expected profits, and local competition are all factors. Hell, aquaponics might be the way to go and then you can skip all that soil remediation and much of the animal husbandry while saving lots of water and eating lots of fish. Best of luck to you!

Nice! Thanks for the tips :). Alot to learn here. This was an old orange grove pre 80s. Whats the best ways to til the grass?

Followed, ty.

For a single acre, a rototiller is likely to work fine. Either that or use a pick and your back like I do. :p

:D, thanks @gmikeyg! Id have no probs w the pick and back but i have a dang health issue. The aquaponics seems awsome, i checked it out a little before and i love fish :). Also i may have issue w animals out here. City only allows so many per 1acre and thats all i have. Not up to date on exact ruling so thats another. Marijauna and theyd arrest me lol. If not thad probably be my crop lol. You have a farm/what kind farm? Thanks again for your inputs, i may be asking more questions in the future :]

It is a great and lovely idea.,apart from having an extra source of income, you also contribute to increasing the world's food security.

You may start start with arable crops that thrives in your area if you have a fertile land and looking at short term earnings, butif you wish for long term earnings, try cash crops that do well there.

Ty @factism, i have some research to do :)

What a nice big open plot of land! I am excited to see what you make of it!
