Garden dwarves are considered by many people kitschy, but they are also the incredibly nice addition to any garden. Charming grandpas in colorful outfits that twiddle in the garden or the terrible creatures of myth and legend that are still among us. Who are they and why we love them?
Like any pop icon in today's world, garden gnomes have except for fans and those who hate them ... Or people that are afraid of them.
People adore them all over the world, and allegedly some of them have magical powers.
The legend says that gnomes (or dwarves, as they are called in some countries) are guardians of underground treasures, as well as gardens. They live underneath the surface of the ground, but if they catch the ray of sun they turn into a stone.
The garden dwarves were always male originally, and they were separated in categories - the working dwarves who held in their hands a kind of garden tools like rafters, canes or bikes, relaxed dwarves laying on the grass, often bearded, usually wear red phrygian caps and often have pipes. and art dwarves reading books or playing instruments. Today there are a number of other types of dwarfs, so you can easily find a naughty, simple, armed, or a zombie-dwarf. There are also female dwarfs, so they often come in pairs.
Today dwarves are mainly produced in China and Poland, the dwarves of Swiss Brienza and German Dresden and Grafenroda, especially the author of Philip Griebel, were once the most appreciated. Their popularity is most pronounced in the German speaking countries and Scandinavia, and it is estimated that in Germany alone, "lives and works" about 25 million dwarves.
The reputation of German gnomes declined after World War I, but they became popular again in the 1930s following Disney's animated film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, when more working-class people were able to purchase them.
Gnoming and the Front of Liberation
In Australia, in the eighties, new fun has begun - 'gnoming', also known as 'traveling gnom'. The screech consists of stealing a garden dwarf, taking it on a journey and taking photographs in various places around the world, and photographs are sent to the owner. This joke was also used in French film Amelie and in 'Where is my garden dwarf?' advertising campaign.
The members of the Fronte of Liberation of the Garden Dwarves, whose alleged aspiration to protect the rights and freedoms, continued with 'gnoming'. During 1997, he had stolen about 150 garden dwarfs in France. The following year, residents of Briey, a small town in the east of France, found 11 garden knights who hung on the bridge and a farewell message. "When you read these few words, we will no longer be part of your selfish world in which we serve only as beautiful decorations," Similar movements have appeared around the world.
Whether you want to put a dwarf in your garden, choose the one that matches your character or the aesthetically best fit your garden.
I will finish my story with this funny fellow :)
Did you know that Gnome Liberation Front is also active in Croatia? Some gnomes were “liberated” and taken to a hidden spot @ Velebit mountain. :)

I never understood the love for these little guys, until one day, I put one in my garden.
Now, I proudly own one and I let a bush grow up in front of him. ;)
