Welcome to da garden, eh! I wanted to show you how I modified my garden wagon for hauling dirt, a bit of yooper engineering.
I bought this wagon at the local tractor supply store. This is the least expensive steel wagon, it has a weight capacity of 600 pounds, according to the box. I didn't need a wagon any bigger than this one, so why spend the extra money. This wagon has a set of removable sides that come with it, but I haven't used them yet. The wagon works well for hauling things like cement blocks, bags of potting soil, etc, and I even put a big tub on it for hauling garden dirt around. The problem with that was that I had to push the tub off the cart to dump it.
Why not just use a wheelbarrow, you ask? Because I have a bad back and it is easier for me to pull the wagon than it is to lift and push the wheelbarrow.
The idea for this modification came from old railroad dump cars that a side tipping platform on top of the frame of the car, those cars were used mostly in industrial and small mining operations.
So, this is what I came up with.
I mounted 2 pieces of treated 2X4 on the frame of the wagon, and then mounted the hardware on that. The 4X4 is on the side of the wagon to stop the platform from tilting very far to that side.
The platform only tilts a bit to the one side. The 3 sides are on the platform to hold the dirt so that I can pile more on than I could without them.
With a load of dirt, the weight of the dirt keeps the platform from tipping until I'm ready to dump it.
Once I shovel the platform full of dirt and pull the wagon to where I want the dirt, I just tilt the platform by hand to dump it. The weight of the dirt is fairly close to the pivot point of the platform, so it's not very heavy to tilt it. As soon as the dirt moves on the platform toward the downhill side, it holds the platform in the tilted position until it's mostly empty. I usually have to push the last of the dirt off the platform with a rake, then it tilts back over to the other side again.
It actually saves me a fair amount of work as opposed to using a wheelbarrow.
Thanks for stopping by and looking at the pictures, eh!

Thanks!
I found it easier to use than the wheelbarrow, that's for sure.

Hey! That's pretty great ingenuity right there! Looks down right professional! I need one of those wagons. I bet those tires are great for my bumpy property!

Yes, the tires do pretty well unless you load too much weight on it. It gets harder to pull over lumpy ground that way. :-)
I'm pretty happy with this wagon. I had one of the less expensive wagons with the plastic body, I wasn't very impressed with that one. I sold that one to the neighbor and she uses it to haul her yard waste. It works ok for that.

Very clever improvisation. You could patent it and produce more and it would be another income stream. I could use something like that.
