First Bean Harvest

Why does the first bean harvest generally occur on the hottest day of the summer thus far?

These are Provider green beans from seeds I saved last year. They certainly live up to their name for they have provided us with many pounds of fresh, frozen, canned and dried beans over the years. Beans are certainly one of the easiest and productive vegetables to grow on the homestead. Looking forward to many more harvests like this in the coming weeks!

Nice! I'd never heard of provider beans before. Our favorite is green beans, too! We usually grow Greasy Beans. I put a post up recently on our harvest, too. It's the Bean-est Time of Year! :-) 100% Upvote and Following.

Tomatoes and cucumbers in the garden are the easiest.
In the greenhouse it's basil. I have SO much this year. Dehydrate it almost every three days and have given quite a bit away... and it's still growing!

Good for you! I have such a problem fighting cucumber beetles every year. Tomatoes and basil just naturally go so well together!

I planted mine late. They're just flowering now! I've grown Provider many times but this year am trying Honey Wax and Maxibel.

I grew Maxibel last year! They are really delicious and nicely textured. Not quite as productive as Provider but ax excellent choice...and freezes well too!

Oooh yeah!! Look at those delicious beauties!! Mmmmm!!! I agree, beans are also my easiest crop to grow, mostly because my kids help me hahahahaaa. And they will grow in so many different conditions, and even in the shade I've had a random seed that dropped, grow!! I'm so happy you save your own seeds too, that is wonderful <3

oh yes, I save as many seeds as I can. I have a spinach plant ready to flower and often have lettuce coming up in and around the compost pile. it's half the fun of gardening for me!

That's AMAZING!!! :) I feel the exact same way, saving seeds is a big part of the process, and so magical to harvest and then plant our own seed eh??

Yes it is, and the more times you save the seed, the better it becomes adapted to your own environment. It's a win win situation!

Here is a nice recipe you might like: Summer greens with bacon and feta

This stir-fry of pods and beans is so pretty and summery, and if you have mint in the garden, which is growing wild as a jungle – it’s a wonderful way to use some of it.

  • 100g fine French beans or sliced runner beans
  • 200g mixed, podded peas and broad beans
  • 150g lightly smoked bacon, chopped
  • 4 tbsp vinaigrette dressing
  • 100g baby plum tomatoes, halved
  • 100g feta cheese, diced
  • Small handful fresh young mint leaves
    (You can replace the feta cheese and mint in the stir-fry with flaked tuna and fresh basil)
  • 4 small eggs

Put a large pan of water on to boil. Drop in a few of the mint leaves then add the French beans. Return to the boil and bubble for 2-3 minutes before adding the broad beans and peas. Return to the boil and bubble for a further 5minutes. Remove the vegetables with a slotted spoon and drain well in a colander. Return the water to the boil, drop in the four eggs and immediately take the pan off the heat and set aside. Place a wok over a high heat. As soon as it’s very hot, add the bacon pieces and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until they are golden and beginning to crisp. Remove to a plate with a slotted spoon. Add 2tbsp of vinaigrette to the fat in the pan, let it sizzle, then add all the vegetables with the tomatoes and mint. Stir-fry for 2 minutes then add the feta cheese and remaining vinaigrette dressing. Serve with a poached egg on top.

sound delish...will have to wait for my plum tomato harvest before trying though.
