HOSTA / with blooms or without?

in gardening •  6 years ago

HOSTA is mostly known for its lush foliage. When it blooms there are many people including myself who cut off the blooms. The bloom have a certain beauty but the are also very messy and camouflage the beauty of the HOSTA leaves. So what do you think, HOSTA with or without blooms.

So that's what is being eaten alive in a neglected corner of my garden!!

Now that you know you can give it a more intimate eulogy.

I think so, the poor thing is in quite a terrible state

They like shade, perhaps that neglected corner is too sunny.

That explains why they are where they are, it is the shadiest bit of the garden but something is absolutely devouring the leaves

Could be slugs, any slimy trails?

Millions, is hard to control them in Scotland. It's like the land is made of them

slugs LOVE hostas. Sheeps wool , which you have tons of in scotland ;) around the base of plants often helps because they don't like to crawl on it thus they don't make it to the plants to eat them :)

I always have this debate with myself. What I do is the more lilac or purple blooms of some of my variety I leave on and the uglier ones, or those that seem sort of straggly, I cut off. Of course removing the blooms make them grow their tubers more and give you more hostas to divide so that is a good bonus to removing them as well.

On or off I just LOVE hostas and they are the workhorse of the garden sun or shade they make it nice!

Ha ha, I too leave the violet blooms, there must be some sense of universal beauty.
