No such thing as men's work on a homestead

in gardening •  7 years ago

In my last post I showed how we mulched with freshly cut grass. In the lower part of the garden, the grass was cut early in the season and had no seeds in it and stayed short. In the upper part, however, time was not enough to cut it, as we visited the garden only on weekends and usually only for 1 day. So in the early summer the grasses were easily 150 cm tall, as all healhty pasturelands become given the time.

Out little girl was not yet 1 year old and still she enjoyed being the the garden and "helping". That grass was used for mulcing trees and covering compost. Anyway, a few seeds won't change anything, as we have a super dense turf of bermuda grass all over the place!

In this photo we're working on a new raised bed. The soil mound was taken from the pathway between the two beds. On the new bed a tray of baby plants can be seen, we planted those in the new bed right away.

I am a working mom, it's a rather tough gig....Go MOM Go.

On our homestead, it is teamwork! no such as men's work or women's work. Whatever needs to be done is done by the first set of available hands whether it is male or female. No room for sexism here!

Here as well. When my husband is working outside the homestead I do the chores, it may take me a lot longer than it does him, but it still gets done. :D Homesteading is definitely unisex, everyone does their part and its great for bringing families together. :D

Your title really grabbed my attention. We work as a team around here. Sure there are some things that my husband does better and vice versa but it's based on abilities not gender (for the most part ...laundry is a sticky subject lol).

Keeping track of toddlers while you're doing adds a whole new level of difficulty.

Its so nice that they are getting an early appreciation for working together as a family. Many hands make things go so much faster. Your little girl looks like she was "helping" a lot but giving you smiles of encouragement and cheering you on. :D Sometimes that is all the help you need. :D
I love that they are so enthusiastic about helping you out. :D
God bless you and your lovely family. :D Have an awesome day my friend! :D

I was raised to understand work was work. No division, no assigned tasks. Everyone DID everything!

Thanks for sharing

Thank you all, ladies, for the supportive comments! I feel girls should not shy away from tough jobs and sadly our culture makes the separation wider and wider... Earth is considered dirty, it makes me very sad to see where are we headed as a culture.

Yes, it's very challenging juggling the kids and the garden and the paying hobby (papermaking) and the household, but it's what gives us meaning in life!

Thank you once again!

Ah yes! Little ones in the back pack while gardening! A good way to stay strong indeed! Great photos. Is bermuda grass native there or is it invasive? Those raised/layered beds look great!

Bermuda grass is native and what's more, it thrives in clay soils, because not much other grasses can do that. The main plants in clay soil are tap rooted ones like chicory, wild carrot, dandilion, dock, etc. So not much competition!

However we kinda like that grass - it takes no maintainance whatsoever, you can mow it as often as you want, you can pitch a tent on it for a week and the grass rebounds for 2-3 days and it keeps the sides of the raised beds from falling. Also, we've started seeding red and white clover around and it seems to lower the concentrations of bermuda grass.

Very cool! It's great that you find so many uses for it. Sounds like we have many of the same weeds here. Do you use dandelion and dock medicinally? They are wonderful herbs...

I am participating in a contest and to enter i must feature a Steemit member of my choice. I would like to feature YOU- and I am wondering if I can use a couple of your photos that correspond with your posts in order to explain why I like your blog.....

Here's a link to the contest that Im referring to:

We don't use them medicinally, just for food. I will have to look into that! Dandelion leaves we put in a salad and sometimes a water infusion (?) of the flowers + some sugar for a sort of a sweet soft drink. And dock leaves with rice and fairy ring mushrooms and spearmint and green garlic and onions is traditional side dish for the Easter lamb dishes.

I agree about the photos, although I did not quite understand how that contest works, will have to consult @bobydimitrov!

That Easter dish sounds wonderful and so unique! Thank you!

With the contest: I am entering it. I have to choose someone else's blog to write about and tell why I like it. Since I like your blog I want to share a couple of your posts and your photos and tell everyone why I like your blog.

Thank you!

Yes no such thing as men's work! we all take part. glad to see you here! XO
