Cacti burdens....

in gardening •  5 years ago

Evening Steemers,
Today has been a long one...

"The burden" .... literally hundreds of cacti that need to be split up, re-potted and sorted.

I mixed my own media blend and began getting millions of tiny spikes in my skin....

The mix consisted of 1 part coarse sand, 2 parts premium potting mix and 2 parts cacti mix (pre made).

Some of the cacti were in pretty bad shape but I think I can make them healthy again.

After working the entire day I had created some kind of order to the seedlings, labeled and split them up a bit so they can grow more.

Over the next few months I will slowly get them all into their own labeled pots but I'm convinced they will be happy enough growing like this while I slowly split them up.

Stay tuned while this cacti burden s lowly unravels and these guys start showing their true colours!!!

Thanks for stopping by and happy gardening,
Sam.

I have a similar task awaiting me, although mercifully, it's not as many as that

And apparently I'm just getting started....hundreds more to come haha

Re-potting cacti can't be a lot of fun...All those spikes and all. I bet you'll have some great photos to show once they grow though...If they flower that is.

I'd be very happy if I can keep the bulk of them healthy, ecstatic if I get flowers.

Oh my! I know exactly what you mean!
I had over a hundred little babies to repot last year. I don't think I will ever again so sow many on one go.

They are looking good! :)

Cheers,
Its going to be a very long process I think....

It is...
My oldest seedlings are 3,5 year old and they didn't even think of blooming yet :P
Hopefully in spring.
Pity so many of them died on the way... Fingers crossed for yours!

I hope some die, I need the space haha.

I'm told a proper dormancy over winter is important for blooms.

Haha just don't get carried away ;)

Yes, they do get that. I keep them with my older cacti that bloom with no problems. I think they were just still to young. But I am hoping to see some flower this spring!

Make sure you share them!!

That was the easy phase, wait until you get to the point where they're all a foot tall and start falling over. Then you'll need to pot them up again and the job will be exponentially more complicated. TBM's are much more manageable in many respects. I'd rather have 10 natwax's or a bunch of TBM's than 100 other exotic crosses these days.

Trich's are cute when they're babies but they grow up to be real pricks :)

Oh yes, I know.....I've had to pot up large ones many times, it sucks!
