Why I let caterpillars to eat my Kale

in gardening •  7 years ago

In summer of 2016, I saw this beautiful butterfly hovering over my cavolo-nero kale pots, which I have on my balcony, leaf to leaf like she has some big business there. when I looked closer, I found that as she was flying from leaf to leaf laying eggs on almost every leaf.
Initial thought I had was to stop her doing this but somehow I managed to control myself not interrupting her.

Look at this beautiful kale I've grown.

Some days later, I started seeing these green things finishing off my plants and that was the second instance I restricted myself from doing any harm to these little green creatures.

finally, my patience paidoff..

couldn't shoot this one hatching :(

This one was hatched under one of the pots. Bizzare how they find such safe hiding places; tiny caterpillars with little brain.

Do you know why I let these green things to be; well one would say it's compassion. I would say I had a bit of that but the logical mind was so strong enough to kill my compassion for I grew this to eat; I love kale. They are so delicious when you fry them with a tiny bit of butter or bit of your favorite oil.

Actually, my logic has a point and compassion here is losingg the game so I created a logic to kill the logical less compassionate mind.

Here it is: I can buy kale from a supermarket but can they?

once they flew off my kale started a new life with new leaves.

Fisrst harvest.

My friend made us this dish that evening on the first harvesting day.
P.S This kale was steamed not fried.
