My $288 Green House!!!

in gardening •  7 years ago

I posted a picture (Actually twice, and as a minnow, I can't figure out how to edit out one of the pictures lol) yesterday in my #introduceyourself video of my 12 ft X 24  ft (3.66 X 7.33 meters)hoop house.  There's been some interest in the comments on that blog, so I thought I'd share a video on how I built it for cheap.  I can plant 40 tomatoes in there plus over 450 lettuce plants, and another 40 pepper plants!!! I hope you enjoy the video!!!  Thanks for your upvotes, and comments!!!  @Goldendawne.

I didn't see your other post but I sure liked watching this video. I love seeing what other folks are doing with their property and the projects they have. I don't have a greenhouse yet, but I've already planned it out in my head. Looking forward to following you.

I followed you!

Sweet. I'm working on more content. I sure wish I had a video camera. I'm stuck with still shots right now.

Thanks for watching it!!! I'm just trying to share what I know.

I like the way your greenhouse is built!
I live in zone 4, so something like this would help to warm up the ground sooner so I could get a head start on some of the things I plant in my garden. The greenhouse that I have now has 16 feet of front facing south, and the growing area is basically 6 feet deep. There's more space behind the growing area for storage.

It seems to be adding one growing season..... I'm in USDA zone 5, but in there it's zone 6

It does extend the season for regular crops. I understand that it can make it possible to grow cool weather crops like kale and carrots well into the colder months. I don't know if they actually continue to grow or if they just don't die off. I know that carrots are good until the ground freezes. I've heard of people covering the carrots with straw to keep the ground from freezing around them when they're in a row cover or hoop house. I guess that way, they don't have to harvest them all at once, but can leave them in the ground until they want to use them. I don't know how well that would work up here with our winters, but it might work where you live. I suppose it depends on how cold it gets at night and how much ground freezing you get.

I finished it last fall, and had Spinach, kale, and lettuce to pick all Winter. We are in hardiness zone 5, so yeah, it can get to 20 below. (-28c) Coldest I've ever seen here was a "Feels like" or wind chill of -53 f (-47c).

How long does your winter usually last?

Say...... Halloween to mid March. Our last frost free date is May 1st.

It sounds like your season is about 2 months longer than ours. We can't put tomato plants in the garden until the end of May unless we're prepared to cover them every night due to frost. We've had frost the first week of June up here.

Brrrrrr!!!

Do you have the black pained barrels of water or anything?

No, but I do have some 4 inch plastic pipes that I sealed one end on , painted them black, and filled them with salt water. The work well, but because of their size, they don't hold enough heat. I built them for the old greenhouse which had much less space in it. It was only 6 feet from front to back.

This is incredible! Can you grow through the winter in there? I am thinking of doing a very very mini version of this for my backyard over the fall and winter so I can have greens and maybe herbs and sprouts. What do you think??

Super deal on that greenhouse! Wow! It would cost more than twice that much here I'm sure.

I know i had commented on this in a previous post of yours so thank you very much for sharing.
