Indoor Lemon Balm Plant SURVIVES & Did You Know...steemCreated with Sketch.

Cut Back On The Lovin'

About ten days ago I posted a concern about my indoor lemon balm plant having browned leaf edges. Well, after careful determination and eliminating possible problems, I came to the conclusion that I had been over-watering the plant and giving it too many nutrients.

So I did what any good mom gardener would; I stopped showing the plant so much love, attention and water.

Then with its browned edges

Now with less watering and nutrients- would you look at my beauty! The browned edges are going away and are less visible. I may have saved the plant with my quick thinking and research.

So I guess my diagnosis was spot on with the watering. I changed up the technique and viola! All is better.

Sure you can see some browning still along a few of the edges, but nothing like it was two weeks ago. There is even NEW growth! I am ELATED!

Overwatering

According to SFGate these are things to consider when you suspect over-watering of plants:

  • Proper watering can help prevent problems.
  • Refrain from following a set schedule for watering and instead let the soil partially dry before watering the plant.
  • Water deeply and less frequently to encourage deep root growth.
  • Deep, thorough watering will promote healthy plants.
  • Regularly check for signs of over-watering by gently removing potted from their containers or digging into the ground near the plant’s root zone.

What I Have Done

I have been intuned to my watering schedule with all my indoor plants now. Instead of just watering or plopping the water into the container or bucket. I go into the soil and water to the roots; not the stem.

I only used the nutrients once since my first concern almost two weeks ago and I think they are getting enough, as I see no further signs of too much.

I have the new lighting system and have set up a schedule, rely more on the south facing windows' natural sunlight and more or less 'filling in' when artificial lighting is necessary.

Doubled check all containers to make sure proper drainage was enough.

On A Different Note: DID YOU KNOW...

Any small/regular mouth mason or canning jar will easily have a store-bought Parmesan cheese lid fit it? I use these on many of my sprinkle spices (ie. crushed red pepper, minced onion and garlic). This way I can store the spices and seasonings in mason jar but still have the convenience of sprinkling into and onto food.

It lives!!! I'm glad you figured out the problem and the plant is once again thriving. Hooray for green thumbs!

Yes it does! I have been watching it... from a distance lol
No more momma garden love from me! I toughened the little lemon balm right up!

Hahaha! It'll be huge before you know it! "Feed me, Seymour!"

Overwatering is something i often forget to think about it nearly wiped out my chilli plants last year. Ive now nearly 10 chilli plants ready to give away as gifts.

I tend to 'hover' over ALL my plants. Indoor and outdoor. My husband says to back off or I'm gonna smother them. Case in example here.

Sometimes too much of a good thing is bad. Many people do not see it, I am glad you figured it out.

Me too before it was too late. I put so much time and effort into my indoor garden this year and I don't want something silly like too much water to be the downfall of it.

I once had a drill sergeant tell me to pay attention to the small details because that is what will come back to bite you.

Those are such true words!

I remember the first time I grew cannabis. The first time it took 2 months till the plant reiched a size of 10cm.

Overwatered as fuck.

I used my trigger finger and put that 1cm into the earth to see how we the earth is and I lifted the pots.

I watered 1 pot and the other one I didn't water. I then compared the weight of them when I have the pot in my hands.

Like that, I started to get a feeling for overwatered plants.

You know, I use to always think... cannabis is JUST a weed... but looking at all the science, botany, chemistry that goes into it is amazing.

The nutrients, the pH levels, etc

I bet some people are wishing they had paid closer attention during high school science class now

I tend to over do everything. It's the mom in me.
My husband laughs at me when he catches me talking to my plants. He walked up on me once in the greenhouse and heard me talking. Yeah, I'm kind of like that!

Yes I agree. After so long you get to know your plants; no matter what they are. Intuition at its finest.

We just want the plants to grow and give them everything they need. Overall they have a role to play in our life. They supply us with food, medicine, drugs, clothing and much more.

People nowadays are just empty vessels, life has so much to offer that is in front of their eyes but they don't see it.

EXCELLENT comment! It really hit home!
Yes people are so "commercialized", "materialistic" and instant gratification seekers that they forget the basics!

Excellent reply Goldy.

The basics are the best.

Nothing makes me happier than the basics.

Moving, sex, reading, learning , nature & socializing with the right people is what is best.

At least for me.
