We have a short retaining wall of about three feet high that runs the length of our home. When I graded the flat spot on our hill for the Outdoor Kitchen and Playground early this year, I pushed all of the topsoil down and back-filled the retaining wall. When it came time to plant our seedlings, we had the perfect plants for this area... Watermelon and Pumpkins!
We have four watermelon plants and two pumpkin growing in an area that is roughly 8 feet by 30 feet. They have happily spread out and taken full advantage of the top soil to grow.
Pumpkins starting to mature and turn color. We have three pumpkins growing very well between the two plants.

A 14 pound melon harvested to eat with dinner!
Still a little ways to go, but we still ate this one! This is our first time ever being successful with watermelon so it was difficult to know how far along they were.

Envious ! I had two melon plants growing in pots, but when I went to move them into the new greenhouse one slipped and broke š

So good! One way to check they are ripe is to pat them like you would a bongo drum of the sound solid-flat they aren't ready yet. When they get a good resonating - kind of hollow sound then they are ready! We have only one vine growing and it hasn't set fruit yet. I might pull it and start again next month.
Such a fun and delicious fruit, hope you're family enjoys. Also this post needs 100% more moobs :-)

not growing this type of melon but I'm hoping for a cantaloupe or two and a pie pumpkin this fall :) I'm taking pictures so when my computer is fixed I'll post like mad to share :D the plants look amazing thanks for sharing

Yeah, I don't think my husband would appreciate them indoors. We have absolutely no access to outdoor space, not even a balcony. Our apartment isn't very big either, but good enough for the three of us.

Nice one! I think we lucked out first time we grew watermelons at our rental. We got some huge ones. Never been able to replicate it since, although it might help if we actually put the seeds in earlier in the season.

Hahaha! Yeah, we worried about planting too early, but it seems to have done well. I don't know if it's a factor, but this area is full 8+ hours of sun, and has good drainage. But again.. I'm not too sure. :)

Great Job! My melons got toasted in the heat. I always heard that you know it's ripe when the nearest curly "Q" to the stem has died. I'm not sure how accurate that is, but you might give it a try.

Everybody loves watermelons :-) Panama has a large export of watermelons but our crops came in a couple of months ago, Same fields are used for rice of corn this time of year. the melon your cutting looks to be about a $4 melon here so a good cash crop.
