Backyard Sunflowers on Steroids

in gardening •  8 years ago

Sunflowers love the sunny afternoons on the side of our house. This year has been no exception. Nearly all of them have at least one bloom on them, but there's more to come because many of the stalks have multiple heads. A few of the gigantic ones, at nearly 10 feet high, have poor posture and a hung head with all that weight. Here are some of my favorite shots from the afternoon this week when the rain finally cleared after hours of showers. Hope these sunny flowers bring a sunny smile to your face.

Nice these are great looking flowers! where are these being grown at? I've had trouble starting from seed due to all the birds eating the sprouts haha

I'm in mid-Atlantic United States. I plant way more seeds than what will make it past the sprouting stage when all the hungry squirrels eat them up. Maybe next year try to plant 4x the seeds that you did this year??

Good advice will do!

You could also try to put a light netting over top while the shoots are very tiny. OR you could try to start your seedlings in containers before planting them in the ground without disturbing the roots. Good luck!

Yep, brought a sunny smile to my face. 🌻

Glad to hear it @lrich! Next year I'm planting loads more so plan ahead for another smile :)

Nice @jaymorebeet, I like that dark-red colored one, is that just another variety, or some freak of nature?

Haha maybe both? Some of the seeds were from a packet of mixed color sunflowers, and this rouge gem is apparently the only one from that packet to make it! So possibly overachieving freak of nature??
