Diary of a Balcony Gardener, Week 2: Growing Rose Bush in a Pot or Container

To grow potted roses is challenging in itself, let alone to do that in a tropical country like the Philippines. Roses typically survive and thrive much better in temperate (4 seasons) climate. They don't tend to do well in super hot and humid summers like we have here in Manila. But with a good amount of TLC, it can be done.

Here is my potted pink miniature rose plant. They are super-cute and just lovely to look at. I also have a white hybrid tea rose but that has yet to bloom again after not getting enough water this past summer when we were away for 2 and a half weeks.

So today, let me share with you some key factors to consider when growing these beautiful plants in a pot.

Choosing the Right Variety Suitable for your Space

I like miniature roses because they don't grow so bushy and they are easy to tend. Just make sure to prune them often to encourage new buds to grow.

Pot size

This depends entirely on which variety of rose you are growing. Miniature roses don't need a huge pot. If it's well taken care of, it can grow well and bloom abundantly in a 1 gallon pot. Hybrid Tea types need something larger - between 2 to 5 gallons depending on how bushy you want it to get.

Watering Frequency

I try to water them every other day when it's not too sunny. However, during the hot summer days you'd want to water them every day.
