My girlfriend and I joined a community garden initiative in my area. We went for the first workshop to get our weekly 2-hours put in. But when we arrived, there was no one there.
This is what the community garden looks like:
The sessions was from 4-7, but we only went for the last hour and would have contributed 2 hours between us since we are only taking one harvest for the two of us. We chose to go to the Saturday working, but they have a Tuesday work time as well. Apparently, there weren't many people and they only stayed until 5:30, 30m before we arrived.
The Verdun community has several community garden locations. The one we joined is called "concombre masque", which means "masked cucumber". It doesn't make much sense, but that's what it's called :P
There are a few perennial plants that come back each year. Also, they plant garlic each fall so that is starts growing in the spring.
Garlic
Chamomile? (I think the community garden rep said?)
Strawberries
There is a garden archway with vines growing on it. It looks nice even though the vines aren't growing any leaves. I will take a picture as the season progresses and I suspect the archway looks even nicer ;)
We saw pictures from years past, and there was plenty of food for two people to eat. They harvest when food is ready and divide it among members. If people don't work their 2-hours per week, they get removed from the group, as free-loaders are not supported ;)
We wanted to try it out the first year and be able to split work time between us if needed. We will see how it goes, and maybe each join up next year for us to each take home a harvest ourselves and each put in 2-hours per week.
How about you?
Do you garden?
Have you ever joined a community garden?
Thank you for your time and attention. Peace.

It's great to see your community organize gardening activities like this, @krnel.
Here in my place, we don't have community gardening activities such as this, but we do gardening in our respective yards. As in my yard, I have many flowers, a banana tree and 2 bushes of bird's eye chili.

In my country Venezuela, we have seen the need to grow our own fruits and vegetables. The truth is not easy but little by little the results are seen. In one way or another, you have to stay alive and bring life to the planet.

I am in full support of a community garden. The benefits are multi purposed. and it is wonderful when neighbors can work together. A win win. You end up growing more than just food. You grow relationships with your neighbors, which many folks have forgotten to do. Thanks @krnel.

@krnel Wow😮!! What a great work. I support community gardening because Community gardens offer people and the community many benefits. They provide opportunities for both recreational gardening and food production, in underutilized spaces. Community gardens are also great for the environment. Food grown locally reduces green house gases produced by long distance transportation of food. Gardens also contribute to biodiversity of species and help to support populations of pollinators.
Finally, community gardens bring people together and may reduce crime rates in the neighbourhood by increasing visibility and engaging citizens in positive initiatives.

I am full-fledged gardener here. I have more plants to plant than I have space for usually too. I get very creative with my buckets, containers and greenhouses. Plus i have two indoor grow tents for my winter gardening.
Yeah... I have an addiction here
