Here I am, sitting and fiddling with Steepshot instead of pickaxing the Greywater basin you see in picture # 4. Or 5. Already forgot which one.

To my defense, I got a bit distracted by the screeching of a hawk right by the chicken area. Couldn’t see him. They blend in so well.

My little dog is smarter than she looks. She went right into hiding. I hope the chickens are as smart.

See all the seedlings coming up? The ones next to the strawberry leaves are onions. That I know for sure.

The dense carpet of little seedlings are tatsoi in with the edible cana. By the New Zealand spinach, we have Glover, calendula, and if we are lucky, chard.

The more sparsely scattered seedlings are coming up in the front. Did you see the temps? And the air is bone dry. Combine that with the famous Santa Ana winds and seedlings are at peril.

I am watering several times a day to give them a chance...

Well, I better go and swing that pickax. Running out of excuses not to 🙊

The 5th😂 Don't know if it's true but they sy not to water them under the heat of the sun. So, i water mine in the ate afternoon to get them soaked overnight plus the soil i cover with sawdust, fruit peels, tiny branches, leaves, etc.
Goodluck!

If it is a Santa Ana, I have to water during the day. They are dry desert winds that can dry anything to a crisp in no time. Between the plants you see I seeded all kinds of things which can be eaten as baby greens. In a few more days, I should have a living mulch :)

Sounds like a killer indeed..it's much complicated than i thought☺

You've got a hawk flying around your compound?! Not sure if it's a scary concern or a nature's joy.

Suddenly the scene from Lord of the Rings where the eagles came down and picked up Frodo Baggins came to mind 😬

I know!! I saw one taking off with a baby chick before and it was just like that. My husband's co-worker was in her backyard and an eagle swooped down and took off with her cat. Crazy!!

If the chickens stay in the compound, they are safe. But if they come out and wander through the yard, they are easy prey.

Oh no!!! From what ure saying it seems to have quite a number of them flying around the area. Guess the are protected species in a way.
Can't just shoot them down huh?

Oh no!!! They are very useful eating all kinds of rodents and such. If they get one of the chickens once in a while, I can't blame them. They are just trying to eat.
And if the chickens don't behave and stay where I can protect them - what can I say...
I think after a while, you get used to losing a certain amount of plants and chickens to predators. But we want them. They are helping and they are very cool to watch.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who has procrastination down to an art, lol!

I remember the Santa Anas well, and those who haven't lived through them just have no idea.

People and animals get on edge, and plants sometimes have to be watered several times daily just to survive the hot dry winds. Everything is stressed.

I've really been missing California of late, and oddly, the Santa Anas are one of the things I miss, so go figure. Of course, I miss earthquakes too, so there's that. ;-)

Funny, I had a dream about the Santa Anas a few months back, in which I was walking at night and came across a coyote, which began walking with me. I felt he had a message for me, but if I ever got it, I don't recall it now. But I do remember the hot, dry winds, even in the dream.

Apparently, you are supposed to come and visit :)

I too love the Santa Ana days. To me, they have an almost supernatural quality to it. The sky has a brightness that is hard to describe and it feels extraordinary. Everything. Life. The yard. Everything.

So many people hate them. Not me. Only the fires which often go hand in hand with them are not to my liking.

I completely agree.

There seems a definite spiritual essence at play, as if the Cosmic Jester is just stirring up the pot to see what will happen . . . but then it has also the feel of the Sorting Hat, bringing everything into stark relief, in a way that seems to bring out in people that which has been simmering just beneath the surface, for good or ill.

To me, it seems most of all sort of a Cosmic Pause, blowing away that which no longer serves us, though so many of us choose to hang on for dear life to the very things that are holding us back.

Far too often including myself.

I wish that the fires weren't part of it, but they have their function as well, and have for millennia.

It is we, and specifically the Army Corps of Engineers, who have suppressed them artificially until their final result is complete conflagration, wiping away anything and everything in their path, which, while devastating, has its function too.

Glad to know that I'm not the only one who appreciates them.

Yes! You are not the only one!! And I love how you put this

feel of the Sorting Hat, bringing everything into stark relief

And you are right on the fires. Plus, the First Nation People were gardening the forests and we didn't recognize that and just let them go wild. Add putting houses in the middle of the wilderness - all over - and you have the perfect recipe for disaster...

The First Nation peoples, by and large, were a whole lot more "civilized" than most of those who supplanted them, and our laws regarding liberty and equality were inspired by - and largely lifted from - their ways of life.

And it goes on. Even recently we have continued failing to recognize that indigenous peoples all over South America were farming their forests, and rather than learning from them, simply bowled them over, pushed them out of the way, and stole - and continue stealing - their lands and ways of life.

Civilization isn't very civilized after all.

We, again, are in 100% agreement.

That's what we get for being lifelong learners, lol! ;-)

Procrastination is my biggest flaw hahaha, glad im not the only one whp does it. I kind of envy you have space to do those hdgjgjj do u live in the country side? Maybe someday I will take up gardening as well.

No, I live in a small city which has basically grown together with a big city - San Diego. But this small town used to be agricultural and has still some bigger lots. We have 1/3 of an acre (0.13 hectares) with a small house on it. So lots of space to grow things.
But you can have a small garden right at your window :)

Santa Ana? Nope, nope, nope! Blow it back out to the ocean and tell it not to come back without rain. I hate that stuff.

I have to blow them back to the desert :)

Wherever, just blow them AWAY! Yucky old hot dry dusty wind.
