This is a tiny little baby tree fern, Cyathea brownii or Norfolk tree fern, one of the biggest tree ferns in the world. Native to Norfolk Island in the Pacific, it can reach 20 metres in height, with leaf fronds 6 metres long. Oops!
Of course, the man at the nursery who sold me this one lied and said it was an indigenous variety and I didn't know any better at the time. Our indigenous ferns do not get as big and are very slow growing. I have had a fascination for tree ferns ever since I first saw them growing in the Eastern part of the country about thirty-five years ago and wanted to get one ever since. They are from subtropical areas and absorb a lot of the moisture that they need from mists, using the hairs on their stems and trunks but you can keep them in our dry climate if you pour water on the trunk regularly. I had it outside for a few days this winter but it didn't like that and the leaves started drying up. I brought it back indoors where it is warm and sunny and it decided not to give up and die on me and is busy unfurling new leaves.
It's still small and has a tiny trunk a few centimeters high but I will have to rehome it at some point because it will definitely outgrow my small garden. Perhaps by then I will be cured of my obsession for tree ferns but I doubt it, who can resist that little furry head? Because I have my own home and garden, I have been indulging my urges to get every plant I ever liked. Perhaps I will chop down the pine tree and plant this in its place. There's an idea I could live with...
Very beautiful!
I tried several times to grow a mini fern, but they did not survive ...

:-( Did you give it enough light? A little bit of morning sun is important for the harder-leaved ferns. They also don't like too much water

Thank you!
So my mistake was that the plant did not see the sun, but there was a lot of light.
And I watered more than necessary .... :-(

I have always been fond of ferns....I think its their sparse structure and repetitious shape and texture that I like. Love those delicate, feathery, fiddleheads...lol anyway very notable post.

A wonderful fern. Never see such an original plant. So it's interesting to learn new about this kind of a surname. Great photo.

I have always been a fern lover, I just haven't had the space to grow them in a long time. There will definitely be more to come!

I love the look of ferns, and we have many in our area, but the hairs on them make me crazy itchy if my skin comes into contact with it.

I planted a tree unwittingly not too long ago without doing any research on it, but it was given as a gift so did not pay much attention. I was pleasantly surprised to see just how quickly and how well it grew almost overnight.
I love ferns, and also my other most favourite tree is the weeping willow, but those have really hectic roots so have to be careful, but I have fond memories of playing in the weeping willow tree in our yard as a child.

Anything that grows overnight is likely to spell trouble or be an invasive plant, like weeping willows :( I also have found memories of them, there was one that I used to sit and smoke cigarettes in as a kid

Oh sorry I think you misunderstood, what I meant was the fern grew so quickly, not the weeping willow :-)
