HARVESTING THE HOPS

in gardening •  7 years ago

Here comes the harvest!

Hops are pretty amazing. Of course their main claim to fame is as a bittering agent in beer, but the uses go well beyond that. There are several claimed health benefits to drinking tea made from hops, and they can be added to meals as an edible as well. Their relaxing characteristics also cause some to add them to sleep pillows.

Personally, I think that they smell incredible!

HOW HIGH CAN YOU GROW?

Hops plants are known to be prolific growers. My brother who sent the rhizomes down to me has his growing up an old telephone pole that he erected specifically for the purpose of growing hops. I raised a long Cedar log for mine last year, and it looks like the may reach the top this year. Check out these beautiful photos of them growing high into the sky!

Honestly, I did not even harvest them all the way to the top. I'll have to get a ladder soon and get back to work!

THE CONES

These fully developed hops cones are ready for harvest. They smell amazing and pluck off with ease. Smaller cones can be left to continue growing and you can get multiple harvests this way.

Just look at the size of this one!

Monster Truck the Pepper came out to help me, and he was a big help indeed. Not being ones for conventional measuring techniques, we picked a "hat full."

WHAT A PLANT!

Having grown hops for two years now I must say that I really like the plant. Once established, they continue to spread and will return for years to come.

At the end of the growing season, they can be cut back to almost ground level. The rhizomes beneath the earths surface will wait until the following spring to return once again.

Since these plants can grow so long in the summer and still be cut back for the winter, they are a great plant to use for shade. When the plant is trellised and in full foliage, it can block the heat of the sun. By being cut back in the winter, they allow whatever sunlight still comes to shine unhindered. I have a few plans for how to use these hops as we move forward on our and, so we will have to see what happens next year.

As always, I'm @papa-pepper and here's the proof:

Do they flower before the hops are produced? Cheers mike

Good job @papa-pepper, upvoted and follow! It looks like a quality hops :) Then do the craft beer?

Gardening has always been my one of the hobbies. I like your contents you produced here on steemit. Good work.

Care to make some beer from them?

I won't be, but my brother does.

Cool! At least he's saving on beer and party budgets.

Tea?? Tea?? Harvesting hops and you talk about tea?? Seriously though, I had no idea you could make tea with them!

First off, I drink so much tea some people call me mr. T. Secondly, the tea is pretty bitter.

The tea is bitter cause it's telling you it should have been beer :)

Could be. smiley face emoji

WOW!! I never saw any such things as hops thanks @papa-pepper for sharing. keep doing the good work!

Thank you for checking it out!

You're welcome :)

Man I'm really enjoying this new upvote power.
Thanks for keeping on brother!

Glad to hear it and thanks for using it here! Lol.

Anytime brother.
It's $3.79 now...I love it!
It's fun to be able to really show some appreciation to great content finally.

No kidding. I'm trying to let mine replenish. I took it down into the 20% range and then kept it in the 30% range for a long time. Soon I will be powerful again!

I got blessed with a lil over 24k in sp delegation

I think hops are related to cannabis too. Cool pics, thanks @papa-pepper!

I would really love to know what you do with these hops man? Do you cook them or only infuse in tea? I've never seen these in Mauritius, It does not grow here i believe!
Thanks mate!
@progressivechef

Never heard of hops as they are not in India thanks for share.

I really need to get some hops started on our homestead!

Also have never seen this plant before thanks for sharing. I'm going to look more into this plant.

I just came across hops in a new gardening and herb book I picked up last week and was thinking about attempting to grow them, but thought... I don't drink beer or even know how to brew it. But knowing I can use for teas and possibly for eating, I may reconsider and attempt them next year. Thanks for the great information.

Me too, I don't drink or Brew but I do like the plant and its other uses. In fact, if you are in the United States, I could even ship you some hops rhizomes in the spring.

OMGoodness! That would be a wonderful gesture! I accept!! And I will post updates on steemit! thank you

First time seeing this beautiful plant. Never stop learning from you papa 😎

Glad to hear it! Thanks.

Nice work papa-pepper, well done. Such a beautiful plant. Really like it.

I have heard of hops but never seen it grow, it is such a beautiful plant. Thank you for sharing :)

It is a beautiful plant, I just wish the Japanese Beetles would leave them alone.

Well I have to admit I only knew of their use for Beer and have always preferred Beer brewed with Hops but i had no idea a) what they looked like I had imagined something completely different, b) that they could be used for other things, Interesting as the sleeping aid may have to look into that and see maybe it would help my wife who has sleeping issues

Have a great weekend

Papa and his little helpers :D the comes look very green and so unique

Its a beautiful plant, seeing it for the first time.

I have never seen this plant before @papa-pepper. These seem to be really awesome. The most beautiful picture is the little pepper having a"hat full" of hops. Thanks for sharing such a valuable information about hops.

Thank you for a great tip on growing hops. It's one of the crops I've been interested in taking a look at.

I love the smell of them and the growth is out of this world, talk about a living wall they provide it! So what all will you be doing with them @papa-pepper?

Having fun with tinctures and teas, plus trying some as food and for sleep pillows.

I'll be using them for living walls of shade in the summer.

Sounds like you have a great set of plans for using them, be sure and share pics for us all!

Hi! Look my project :) I think you like it.

We tossed around hops as something to grow in the greenhouse, looks like they would have been worse than the kiwanos as far as a monster grower, glad i nixed that idea now! LOL

@papa-pepper this is awesome to see! I used to live in Madsion County, NY where hops used to be a major cash crop before corn took over :(

However they are now making a huge comeback due to the craft beer scene and I as well grew them when I lived up there. I am not sure if you know what strains you have but my favorites are Cascade and Chinook!

Thanks for sharing!

We make our own beer & buy our hops. I meed to do some research and grow some next year! Thanks for the insight.

They reproduce well, and I could get you some to start with if you are in the states.

I am in KY....

Very cool. I've never seen a hops plant or its yields before...heard of them of course but didn't even realize they grew on trees.

That means I've learned something new today so its been a very productive day. :D

Thanks for sharing. :D

The awesome thing i've learned from your post pops is that you can add them to sleep pillows.
@o@

Now where can i find those in manila. :3

Great post as always @papa-pepper! I have never grown hops but would like to try. I am interested in others uses rather than beer. When we lived in the north it was too cold to try and now we're living in the tropics. So what I would like to know...can I grow them here?

very interesting...

After hardwork , then come harvest...this is good because it reflects all works of life. Great to see @papa-pepper and clan keeping it real. Wish you all more success.

It's my first time to see that plant, there is no such thing like that here

Ohhhh, hops smell sooo goooood! I will admit I didn't know the other uses besides beer. But now that I do I might try my hand at this next Spring. My good buddy home brews anyway so why not?

What do you use the plant for?

Super interesting post. I know only a little about hops, so I appreciate you sharing.

In 2009, my brother met a couple who were both engineers for a large automotive supplier. They took buyouts and purchased 40 acres in mid-Michigan and started by planting 5 acres of hops. If I recall correctly, they installed 400- 22 foot telephone poles and created a giant trellis system. They built a good business supporting local Michigan craft brewers. They even have a local brewer contest each year at their farm and it sounds like they are doing well. Only issue was its a massive amount of work to tie up the plants as they grow up the trellis. They ended up buying a piece of equipment to assist with this.

Upvoted. Resteemed.
