THE POPCORN HARVEST IS BEGINNING!

in gardening •  6 years ago

Check it out!

This is our third year planting popcorn, but this year it wasn't @papa-pepper who planted it.

We planted two batches around three months back, and Monster Truck was the one who planted our first batch. To get the next generation of gardeners started young is an excellent investment in the future.

Not only is popcorn a great, tasty crop to grow, its varied colors, shapes and sizes can be amazing to behold. This little guy is an eager helper, and now he's getting a return on that investment.

After planting and watering, it's just been a waiting game. But now, the wait is over... Well, at least for the harvest to begin anyway.

THE NEXT GENERATION OF GARDENERS AND HARVESTS

This is a photo of the first ear of popcorn for our 2018 harvest. It was already drying up, so we picked it to avoid further temptation for worms or bugs. Now, Monster Truck can see the results of his efforts.

Interestingly enough, this ear probably has about the same number of kernels that he planted on it. That means that even if no other plants produced, he'd at least get back what he put into it. Now, everything else will be above and beyond the amount of seeds that he put into it.

It's a good looking ear of popcorn for sure. Plus, once it finishes drying, we'll be able to taste the "fruit of his labor!" With things like popcorn growing in the garden, it's not hard to inspire children to give growing a try! We can't wait to see the other ears, and their fantastic colors, as the harvest continues to come in!

As always, I'm @papa-pepper and here's the proof:

Until next time…

That's awesome. There's so much to be learned in the simplicity of give-and-take that growing food provides. I've always wanted to grow/eat some more colorful, non-hybridized varieties of corn while still fresh. I love to eat blue corn for its high selenium and silica content (and of course those anthocyanins!) but you can only find white and yellow corn in the grocery stores, which is really too bad.

Blue corn is great! Most places only carry white and yellow, so we've got to grow our own to get the good stuff.

Monster Truck did a good job! That ear looks yummy! We only have yellow ones here so I'm a little bit envious to see all the varieties available to you!

I spent my childhood on the field (I'm from a farmer family) Some of my friends can't even recognize the veggies on the field (They would not know which one would be garlic for example). I'm so happy that I've learned how to plant my own vegetables when I was so young!

Glad to hear that you learned young too!

What a beautiful crop - you guys and especially Monster Truck must sooooo happy! Bless you all and enjoy that Popcorn! Rainbow blessings and love to you 🌈🤗❤️

He was very pleased with the result! Wanted to show @mama-pepper right away!

Awww bless him! 🤗

beautiful pic @papa-pepper

Wow , never really see a popcorn. so popcorn just ordinary corn or they are special type of corn?

nice

The color there of pop corns is very different. Here it is more yellowish while on your side it is reddish.

We've got a lot of varieties available, although yellow is the popular one.

This is incredible sir. We don't have much varieties here.

The colors are incredible. I only know the industry-grade yellow ones here.

Planting corn is what we can't do without, especially here in Nigeria, we love it so much but that particular specie you have over there with different beautiful colours are a bit scarce here.
I enjoyed reading your post so much @papa-pepper

Thanks! We love the different varieties that we have access to!

Amazing photography. I appreciate your efforts for taking such wonderful photos.

I think it's great for children to see form start to finish the results of their hard work and investment.

So many kids have no clue where things come from; aside from the grocery store.

My dad had a nice big garden that’s he’s super passionate about. Each year he asks us something that we want him to plant. He started asparagus this year but I think he said it won’t actually produce for a couple of years which kinda blows.

I don’t know why we never thought to tell him corn. We all love it and it looks like a fairly easy crop. On the to do list for next year. Love the different colors there. Beautiful.

This was my first year trying popcorn, so I am keeping my fingers crossed that it produces. We go through a lot of popcorn here, so if it does good I will have to try some other varieties.

Keep it up @papa-pepper and thanks for continuing to be a good example!

I love the teaching opportunity! Monster Truck is learning that hard work pays dividends, which is ROI! Good show! That is a really nice looking cob!

The truth is that I have never seen a corn or corn of that color, in my country are yellow or white there are no other species. I would like you to take a look at my last publication, maybe you will know a reality that you do not know, greetings
