Balcony Forest Update 3 September 2018

in gardening •  6 years ago

Welcome to my forest, Steemians! I repotted my friend Ellie the Elm Tree (new official name) into a bigger pot today. So now she lives next to my chair on the floor of the balcony. She's as tall as my hips!

The tomatoes are doing well, but it'll be a while before I get fruit, I think:

The other marigold blooms are about done, but it looks like I'll be getting another one soon:

This one surviving apple tree (out of three, originally; the other two fried when I had them in a different location for a week and never recovered) is totally a spider pantry with as many gnats as they caught in their web on it:

Yep, all those dark spots are dead bugs. Speaking of bugs, when I repotted Ellie, a ladybug crawled out from the wood chip mulch looking dazed and confused and I was all, "Oh, sorry, sweetie!" But I think they're okay. They've moved after chilling for a minute to get their bearings.

I love this time of year when I'm all hiding behind the canopy curtain on the balcony and I feel safe and forest like. Except for the noise, you'd almost forget the Construction Zone down the street. You can see it peeking through the hole:

Sad news, my maple tree friend has taken a turn for the worse after hanging on for so long after The Week In The Courtyard (because of when mgmt sprayed the wasp nest). But I'm not giving up! The apples were smaller and much more toasted. Maple might have some roots and come back in spring, so I'll keep watering. I have had a lot of luck with sickly plant recovery when it comes to houseplants; when I worked at Home Depot, the garden department came to me with their hard luck cases and I took them home and recovered them all, so you never know!

Liiiiiiive!

That's about it from the Balcony Forest in the Sky. Yuan's cat grass did this odd sprout on the edges and just a dud in the middle thing, so the company is sending me a new pack of seeds. I've planted in that container in that area before so they should be fine, and I wrote them like ...please? And a replacement is coming. It never hurts to ask.

Have a great day!

Awww Ellie is doing awesome!! No nightmares on Elm street for her! I'm glad they're replacing those seeds for you, go Phe go! Also little maple and apple seedlings, I'm sending all my love and good vibes to you!!

Thank you for the good vibes to my tree friends! I just made them all a present, which I will make a post about when the paint is done drying. ;)

Awesome, I'll be looking for that post! <3 :)

Liiiiiiive!

That positive energy is a must! This is a wonderful effort, I am so happy to see it! Sorry for falling on your blog today like a ton of bricks but that's how I roll and apparently you too because you posted so many awesome things today!

Love love love all the life energy of your floating forest on the balcony, keep up the great work, a bit of carbon sequestration is awesome for everyone involved!

Love and Light and great green growth!

I totally blog or comment in spurts of focus, you'll get no teasing from me on that score! LOL
I love to be surrounded by plants. If I have to live in the concrete jungle, I'm going to grow me some plants! ^_^

What!? No Cannabis? Aren't you in Colorado?

It's true, no cannabis. For one, even though it's legal in state, it's an evictable offense in my apartment. But that doesn't bother me, because I don't partake, anyway. It's just a negative association thing for me: my dad is one of the 1% of people who, when I was a teenager, would get violent on pot. He didn't do that when I was really young, so it might be that it just interacted weird with the ten prescription meds he was on at the time, but otherwise it indicates underlying psychosis, which can kick in later in life (and runs in the family). So, smelling others smoking it, that's where the smell takes my mind, to those memories. Edibles might be an option, but I've kind of always been afraid I would react like he did, so I just never tried it. I don't drink either, for the same reason.

I love your balcony forest! And lady bugs!! 😍🐞🐞🐞
