Green & Wet - My Winter Balcony Garden

in gardening •  6 years ago

Israel doesn't really have what most of you would call "winter". We never get snow and temperatures rarely drop below 10c. This is just one of the reasons I spend quite a bit of time on balcony in the winter.

(Winter in Israel = Double Rainbows! - View from my balcony)

I like to call it "my room". Between woodwork, furniture renovation and just standing there listening to the rain (yes, I am weird), I've also developed a gardening hobby, which took quite a bit of courage. Having always believed I was a serial murderer of plant, I had to take a leap of faith to plant things. So far? I've barely killed any of the plants.

My cats, however, are a different story. They like to chew on everything from succulents to mint.

I've been feeling a little under the weather, so on one of the rainy days we had in the past week I took some time to rest and home-grown herbal infusion while watching the rain fall outside my balcony. The drops on the leaves were a perfect excuse to take some photos and show off to you all.

It's important to note that most of the plants on my balcony are not just for looks - they have uses. From treating insect bites and deterring mosquitoes to adding flavor to foods, I like to plant things that aren't just pretty.

Some wet Aloe Vera

Rain on Sage

In the summer, I will have my own grown tomatoes!

Basil Loves Rain

Salvia Elegans - Tastes AWESOME in tea

Fresh mint, anyone?

Future coriander

Rosemary in the rain

Blooming lavander

Will be dill

I hope to give you more sneak peaks of my garden as I plant more and feel like sharing my gardening accomplishment.

P.S. Photos were not filtered or edited, so all the colors are exactly as my camera captured them. It's an LG v20, in case you're wondering.

I love munching on some green onions while I'm out there!

Nice garden!

A: It rains in Israel?
B: A bit of catnip can fix that problem. In fact, catnip is part of the mint family, so basically your kitties are trying to get stoned, cause you won't share...

#howcouldyou #whydoesitalwaysrainonme

A. It does, but not nearly enough.
B. LOL. I don't share?! I planted a seed I found in my medical delivery and the fuckers ate the sprout. I am going to buy and plant some catnip in a flowerbed I will build especially for that purpose. Not that it'll help - they're terrorists and will find a way to make a mess of my garden.

If you want catnip to survive, it will have to be in a hanging basket. Speaking from experience

I really love Isreal as a country, it is one of my vacation destination next year, 2019

The pictures are so beautiful, the only one I have seen personally is the aloe vera because it's very common in Nigeria

@techslut it's good to know that you live in Israel — the Holy Land

It's Holy to others. To me it's mostly a warm home. I hope they let you visit as Israel has been a hypocritical shit about African citizens. There's a refugee problem in Tel Aviv already, and the government are cunts about the whole thing.

Love the basil, could never make that specific to grow in my place..

It seems that the weather in Israel is not too different than the one in Crete!

Oh! Love the photos too (especially the 'will be dill' one) and I was kind of hopping to see photos of your cats :)

Enjoy a lovely holiday!!

Which of the basils? There's the common one and the Yemenite (African?) one (purple flowers). Crete is not far. I should visit. It's also really cheap. What holiday? It's sunny and nice and I have a lot of work to catch up on while yall celebrate.

And I promise to include images of the fluffy terrorists in my next gardening update. <3

I LOVE growing things. Whenever anyone says they can't do it I always encourage them to try again and just see that plants only want two basic things, light and water, and of course some want those two things in different ways, but it's easy to give it to them.

It looks like you have a green thumb to me!

I'm so excited to be in South East England for the winter which to me, being from New England, it is like Spring here all Winter long and things grow here that would be under snow back in my part of the usa. So, I'm going to try some lettuce and other cold loving things in our veg beds here in January and see how they do.

<3

I am now trying to convince my mother in law to start gardening on her balcony and she feels like a plant murderer as well. We'll see what I can do!

I am a n00b gardener myself and very interested to see how other people garden, especially within the boundaries of a balcony. Catnip should grow well in balcony conditions in Israel... I am currently trying to grow some indoors with LED lights.

Warm winter is... cheating :D

It is! Dear weather - stop cheating!!! I want snow!!!!

Rainbows!!! 🌈

Mmmm... so many yummy herbs. I’d be rubbing rosemary between my fingers, breathing deep.

I am not a huge fan of rosemary, but it works great with baked foods. I made some fish for @elear's visit a couple of weeks back. Grabbed whatever looked like it would work from the balcony, wrapped the fish in herbs and some lemon (I stole from the neighbors, they let me), salt pepper, tinfoil and into the oven. Gotta say, the herbs were perfect and the fish came out delicious.

So when are you coming to rub my herbs? :P
