It was a late start on the fall garden this year, but things are looking good!
It has been a long autumn-- here it is October 23rd and we haven't even had a frost yet. This week though, that all changes, and I'll have to build little greenhouses over the garden beds-- freezing temperatures and snow are forecast for this weekend here in the Ozarks!
The seeds that I planted last month are doing well, and while they are growing slowly, they have a chance to make it until spring if I build their little greenhouses well. That project will be an upcoming post, but for now, here's some little sprouts that demanded to be photographed.
Rainbow Chard
Chard is good at growing through the winter inside a little greenhouse box, and it looks like a few of them are going to eventually add some color to the garden.

Russian Red Kale
Another plant that I've had luck growing through the Ozark winters is this Russian Red Kale. It's pretty green now, but a few weeks in it's winter greenhouse surrounded by frost and snow, the leaves will take on a reddish color as the winter takes over the garden.

Spinach
Here's the tricky part for me: spinach. I like spinach, and I can sprout spinach, no problems there, but I have yet to get a decent harvest of spinach since I started trying to grow the stuff-- about 8 years ago. I'm not sure why they stall after sprouting, maybe I'm just too impatient.
Here's a well-fed, well-drained bed of spinach-- I'm trying it again. I'll post pictures of the thick foliage that I expect to see in this bed here in a few months. I like spinach, I'm determined to grow a batch, and I have a lot of seeds.

Here's a couple more pictures of the gardens, and...
... here's a little house that I had nearly forgotten: a bee house that never got any bees, I'll pull it out of the overgrowth and inspect it soon-- another post for another day.
thanks for looking, I'll post pics of the making of the tiny greenhouses this week, let me know how your garden grows in the comments, or if you know how to grow spinach, I could use the help!
Nice place where you live, absolutely love the look of the place and the gardening. Too much envy as space is scarce where I live and it's all high-rise everywhere.

I know that feeling, I lived in NYC for a while, and when I came back here to the Ozarks it was quite a contrast-- took a while to get used to again!

I know! The best gardens of the future will have time machines installed to speed things up out there.

You got a wonderful small farm over there! I am thinking of planting some veggies too in my yard, what do you think it is the easiest to start with? I live in Phuket, Thailand, so it's pretty hot here! Followed and upvoted, mate!

You might be able to easily grow tomatoes in the heat there, and maybe fruits like strawberries would grow there, I don't know though- I'm a beginner at this really!

It is great work, and I didn't spend much time out there this year, it's nice to have some things growing. If I can keep from picking them all this winter, these plants will really take off growing in the spring.

There's nothing like veggies fresh from the garden :) When you do make the post of building the little greenhouses, definitely use the steemiteducation tag for it. That's a great benefit for people, and the more exposure to it, the more people will get to see it :)

Yep, that kale is getting nearly big enough to start harvesting already, one of the things I like about kale-- near-instant gratification in gardening standards-- that spinach will probably take forever, it is. slow.
I always hesitate to use the steemiteducation tag, I never know if it's appropriate. Since of course all of my stuff is educational, it is tricky. ;)

I love kale. I have a friend who is a big time gardener, and at a certain point of the summer myself and a girlfriend pick through his garden and make Italian dishes featuring lots of kale. Although I think her main motivation is the fresh salsa, he has everything you could want to go in salsa and we make tons of it :)
I know what you mean, I think it's trickier for the author to decide to use certain tags, and I'd probably feel the same if it were me, but if you do a step by step of how you built the greenhouses with pictures, take my word for it, it's appropriate. I nearly told you to use it for this one, but definitely that one will be fine.

Gad, maybe it's the troubles with posting and up voting, but I used that fancy tag on an 'educational' post yesterday and it was universally ignored. lol Maybe I'll start posting 4 times a day (you might want to disconnect your auto-vote for this!) My idea for the next educational post, 'winterizing your garden'; (no picture) "I threw plastic over my shit to keep it from freezing. Upvote and resteem!"
Don't worry, I amuse myself thinking of stupid things to do, but I usually don't actually do them. I predict that these glitches will be gone by the weekend, and we can all regroup.

At one point I had to go check to make sure I spelled 'education' correctly :\
thx for the backup.

One reason that I hesitate using the tag is that I used it on a post a few weeks back and after a few hours, I decided that I was stretching the meaning of 'education' and I went and edited the tag out, so nobody would have to struggle with me about it. That said, I just used the tag today on a little filaree seed post :0

*That same friend is a gardener for an herb we both enjoy as well ;) And he is a gifted grower, I've become a snob for that particular herb because of him.

Yep a lot of food can be grown in a small space, and little gardens get better care and attention sometimes.
