I am new to growing radishes and turnips. This is my first year growing them, but I really enjoy growing them because they grow pretty fast. Radishes are as close as it gets to instant gratification in the gardening world.
Radishes do really well in my area. There are wild radishes growing along the side of the road in my neighborhood. If there are radishes living in the wild then you know it is possible to grow radishes in your area.
The articles that I have read on harvesting radishes suggest that you pick a few and see if they are ready. When you discover that a few of them are ready then you harvest the rest of the radishes that you started at the same time.
Does anybody know of another method for determining when radishes are ready? What are the best varieties of radish that you have tried? What kind of dishes do you use them for?

i typically harvest radishes 3-5 weeks after direct sowing, depending on the weather. there are the red ones like you have, that have more of a peppery bite. i've tried some white ones that were more onion-flavored, and ready to pull about the same time.
turnips can be finicky! i've pulled some at 4 weeks that were too small, and i've pulled a 2-pounder at 6 weeks that was bitter and tough.
have fun in the dirt!!

Thank you for the tip. I was wondering if I could still plant some radishes now or would it be too cold?

your soil needs to be at least above 45-55F with no threat of frost, from what i can remember.

I think the temperature was in the 30s last night. It pretty much never snows here. I do find ice on might windshield occasionally.

i'd say it's still a bit too cold. you could always try something indoors - like sprouting! sprouted radish seeds are delicious.

That is a great idea! I have so many extra seeds and I won't be able to plant them all. I should eat them as sprouts.
