We love aquaponics! We love aquaponics so much in fact, that we currently have 3 aquaponic systems. The main difference between aquaponics and hydroponics is where your plants nutrients come from. When everything is running smoothly with aquaponics all plant nutrition will come from the waste of the fish in your care. All you will need to do is simply feed your fish, test your water occasionally, and let nature run its course.
This is a 3 gallon aquaponic system home to a betta fish and snail. The plants on top are radish sprouts.
This is a 2.5 gallon and system is home to a lone betta fish. This is our first prototype system it contains 4 Thai basil test plants that we transplanted from soil pots.
These Thai basil plants are a perfect example of what happens when your fish does not quite produce enough waste to support your plants. These plants are by no means dying but they could be much happier. We knew going in that 4 plants would most likely be too much for the system but we decided to experiment and confirm our theory.
This was our first crack at larger scale aquaponics.
This system is the reason we love aquaponics and things are running super smoothly today. This system is a 70 gallon system that contains 4 black channel catfish.
This picture was only 2 weeks later than the above picture but I am sure you can already see one of the issues we ran into. If not do not worry I won’t spoil the short scroll down to the next image.
After only 3 more weeks we were a little too successful.
We also had some issues with the fact that we had way too many plants for the system. Though this system kicked our butt the first time we would definitely not trade the experience. We have since redone the system and it is as easy as remembering to feed the fish daily.
So when you do your own aquaponic system if things do not go your way or you're too successful like we were do not give up. Just take the lesson the system taught you and try again you will get it and you will appreciate the first try that much more.

Awesome post! I love aquaponics as well! Is there any way you can verify that you are indeed the original author of this post, maybe by making a verification post on your twitter page?

It's becoming more mainstream. There are starting to be smaller farms that are getting into it in a big way, especially for off season production. It's a game changer, because of the way it totally upsets the current paradigm of buy nutrients(fertilizers etc) and sell plants. This brings an additional output, and greatly simplifies the input, while requiring much less continuous work than traditional farming.
I love it :)

First Thank you all for taking the time out of your day to read our post! Aquaponics is definitely becoming more mainstream especially for people that do not have the same amount of space as traditional farmers. I have a friend down here in Austin that is currently building a commercial size system. When he gets it up and running I will make a post about it.

Interested to know more if this ended up getting established. I'm a DIY/backyard aquaponist (is that the term?) and would love to take a look at a large scale operation in central Texas.
