Gardening to grow food

in gardening •  7 years ago  (edited)

When i started to garden i never thought i would have taken to it as much as i have. As it turns out i have a pretty good green thumb. I started out small only doing herbs like basil and rosemary. But as i learned the basics of gardening i began to reach out into other plants. My real reason for starting in the first place was to learn to grow food. I am not into flowers or pretty ornamental plants. I wanted food. As it turns out less then 1% of the population knows how to grow food. Compared to my grandparents generation where 40%-60% knew how to farm/grow food. It is an important skill that i really feel will serve me and my family well in the near future. The state of the U.S. economy and world economy as well as global political events that are taking shape are not looking positive. Sense most food is trucked in from hundreds of miles away i thought it would be prudent to learn how to feed my family in an emergency.

One does not simply walk into a field and plant seeds and up comes crops. Its not that easy. But a lot of people think that is how it works. It takes know how and most importantly it takes experience. I have learned a lot of growing lessons the hard way. But learning from those lessons is what makes a good gardner. I hope to share my lessons and experiences on this platform to help other people learn to grow food. Anyone who says they know all about gardening is a liar, and i don't certainly claim to know all but i get you started and on your way to a successful garden that will generate food.

So lets get our hands dirty!!!

I couldn't agree more. I'm on my 3rd year of gardening and it's been very interesting. Best of luck to you and your garden!

i appreciate that. I just want to be able to feed my family in an emergency situation. But now that i have been doing it for a couple of years i really like it as a hobby and challenge!!!
