The Japanese silverberry (Autumn Olive)
I believe this one is called Elaeagnus Umbelata, but it could be Elaeagnus Multiflora. And boy I hope all those flowers will become berries. But I'm not really sure if that will happen, maybe I need to get another one for the pollination.
Actually I have both of them in the garden, but one of them is still small and not flowering jet. Maybe I'll buy a third one.
This is only one part of a branch it's unbelievable.
It's a very permaculturistic plant so to say, it has a lot of functions.!
It fixes nitrogen in the soil. So it makes the soil more fertile.
You get berries, that you can make into fruit leathers or jams.
But wait theres more.
Birds like it, the shrub environment, and the berries as well, I hope they'll leave some for me though:) But I like birds so if they eat it all I don't mind. I should have put a net over it.
And even tonight there where bumblebees still visiting the thousand of flowers. I couldn't get a photo of him...or her, s/he was very buzzzzzzy.
I bought this shrub with ten others, as part of a wild hedge. I placed them in a "Back to Eden" kind of a bed. If you don't know what I mean by that, and you are interested in lazy gardening like me :) it may be worth to watch this film. It's very religious but I don't mind. Maybe you do, but I warn you, if you turn it off because of that, you're going to miss A LOT of good information. A lot :)
Hope you enjoy.
Here's a link;
It's also on Vimeo without the commercials, but the link didn't work so I got the Youtube link in here. Hope you don't mind;)
